Donald Crowley Obituary

Crowley, Donald
Donald Kenneth Crowley died peacefully on the morning of March 24, 2011 from Multiple Myeloma. He was 72 years old. Donald was born on December 18, 1938 in Albany, California and married his high-school sweetheart, Toni Marie Crowley, in 1963. Donald had over 45 years of professional experience focused primarily in the investment research field. He served as director of investment research, chaired various investment committees, managed institutional portfolios, and served as an equity analyst in his 25 years at BankAmerica and Keefe, Bruyette & Woods. Following his retirement from KBW in 1992, Donald served as Chairman and later as President and CEO of Smith & Crowley, Inc., an investment banking company formed with Robert H. Smith, retired BankAmerica president and former CEO of Security Pacific Corp. After moving to Payson, Arizona, in 1998, Donald launched Arizona Rim Country Investment Management, building its investment management practice for eight years before blending its operations with Stellar Capital Management in late 2006. He consulted, authored and spoke extensively on banking, financial stock investments, and related topics as far away as London, Japan and Abu Dhabi. Donald held memberships in the Phoenix CFA Society, the New York Society of Security Analysts, and the CFA Institute. He served on the Board of Governors of Gila Community College, the Board of the Mogollon Health Alliance (owner of Payson Regional Medical Center), the Executive Committee of WakeUpCall - Concerned Citizens for Gila County Political Reform, the Advisory Board of the Zane Grey Cabin Foundation, as Co-Chair of Citizens for Better Payson Government, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Zane Grey Country. He and Toni were major contributors to the construction of the Payson Library. He also held various trustee and director positions at Independent Bancorp of Arizona (owner of Caliber Bank and now part of Wells Fargo Bank); NextCard (an Internet credit card company), the A. P. Giannini Foundation (named for the founder of Bank of America), the Lindsay Museum (a wildlife rehabilitation facility in Northern California), and the museum's endowment fund. Donald was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, attended the New York University Graduate School of Business in banking and finance, and investment and executive programs at Harvard and Claremont Colleges. He was a tremendous role model and patient teacher. He loved to learn, and was fascinated not only with economics and global markets, but with current events, politics, art, world religions, history and science. He also loved baseball, especially spring training. Throughout his battle with Multiple Myeloma he demonstrated immense courage and determination and continued with his work until weeks before his death. He had a gentle, loving disposition and a great sense of humor to the very end. Donald is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Toni Marie Crowley, three children, Michael, Kelly and Kristin Crowley and by his granddaughter, Elle LeBlanc. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to any of his three favorite charities: Hospice Compassus; St. Vincent De Paul Food Bank of Payson; or, the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund. We are indebted to Krisin's fiancé, John Lamont, who provided unlimited comfort and assistance to the family. We would like to express enormous gratitude to the entire staff of Payson's Hospice Compassus, who soothingly cared for him the last weeks of his life. He will be missed. Details of a memorial service are pending.

My husband, Bob Borson, and I recently learned of the death of Don Crowley, and we want to express our condolences to his family. Both of us worked with Don in the 1980s at Bank of America, in San Francisco, and have always admired him tremendously. He was a master of gentle strength. He was both brilliant and modest. He kept his eye on the ball and a twinkle in his eye. We cared for him deeply and are sorry to have lost track of him over the past 20+ years. We extend our thoughts to the many family members and friends he left behind.
