Charles Adams Obituary

Adams, Charles J.
86, passed away peacefully March 23, 2011 due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was the eldest of four children born to Joseph E. and Viola Jane Adams in Houston, Texas, April 24, 1924. He was a student at Baylor University when WWII began so he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. After serving in the military transport unit he returned to Baylor and received his BA degree. He continued his education at the University of Chicago Divinity School where he received his PHD in 1953. Charles taught Religion a year at Princeton University, then at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he was a Research Fellow in the area of Islamic Studies. He spent two years in Pakistan under a Ford Foundation Scholarship. He returned to McGill and was Director of the Institute of Islamic Studies for 21 years.In 1963 he married Joanna Teslar. After retiring from McGill Charles and Joanna moved to Gold Canyon, AZ. Charles was a Professor of Islamic studies at ASU for several years. In 2004 they moved to Leisure World, Mesa, AZ where Joanna passed away September 2005. Charles is survived by one brother Paul Adams (Bonnie), of Houston, TX, a niece Lorrie Gorney, Spring, TX and friends Betty Tittman, Ruth Ann and Jerrell Thacker. He will be missed by many friends and colleagues. A celebration of Charles's life will be held April 4, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Leisure World Rec 1 building with a lunch to follow.
