Velma Magee Obituary

Magee, Velma
91, of Phoenix AZ passed away on March 26,2011. Born in Buxton, Oregon on March 21st 1920, Velma and her twin brother Veldon were the first born children to Earl and Arlie Newcomb. They were followed by the arrival of 3 more brothers Don, Earl, Leroy and a sister Irene. She lived most of her early years in Washington where she met and married her first husband Bud Hutchins who was killed in WWII. After the war she married Jack Magee and they had 5 children Nancy, Judy, Jerry, Tom and Mollie. They moved their family from Oregon to Phoenix in 1959. Velma quickly adapted to her new home and raising her five children. As the children got older she went to work as a cashier at A J Bayless from where she retired in 1982.. She was a talented artist, seamstress and cook. She loved working crossword puzzles, sports and was a big fan of The Phoenix Suns basketball team. She is survived by her loving companion Cal Oakason of 36 years, 4 of her children Nancy Lynch, Judy Patterson, Jerry Magee and Mollie Good. Two siblings Leroy Newcomb and Irene Vories, plus 6 grandchildren Jack Gibbs, Bill Gibbs, Eric Scritchfield, Robin Cole, Jason Schall and Jeremy Schall, many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her son Tom Magee, her husband Jack Magee and brothers Veldon, Don and Earl. Velma contributed something to every life she touched, and although she will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her, she passes on a legacy of strength and regal grace that will live on for generations. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, April 1st at the Emmaus Lutheran Church 3841 W Sweetwater Ave. Phoenix AZ 85029. A reception will immediately follow the service at the home of Velma's daughter Mollie Good . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arizona Kidney Foundation (http://www.azkidney.org/) or Emmaus Lutheran Church http://www.emmauslutheran.com).
