Alice Mahoney Obituary

Alice Doyle Mahoney Alice Doyle Mahoney died peacefully on Tuesday, March 29th at sunrise in her Phoenix home sur- rounded by six of her nine children. She was 87. Born into one of San Franciscos most prominent families, she graduated from Dominican College in 1944 and went to work as a nurses aide during the war. On a weekend visit to her uncles home in Carmel, she met 27-year-old U.S. Navy Lt. William P. Mahoney, Junior, en route to the war in the South Pacific. They got engaged before he shipped out and were married when he returned nearly two years later in May 1946. They then moved to Arizona and bought an old farm in north central Phoenix that became a haven for dogs and horses, artists and activists, the occasional Kennedy, and an unending stream of like-minded spirits from across the country and around the globe. Alice Mahoney was an accomplished equestrian, a devoted student of the Irish poet William Butler Yeats, a loyal alumna of The Sacred Heart (her San Francisco high school) and a steadfast soldier of a generation of progressive causes that began with the struggle for civil rights in the 1940s in Phoenix. No experience so captured her idealism and energy as the Mahoney years in Ghana. A wise and nurturing mother, she filled her days by giving, forgiving and never giving up. Her beloved husband, former U.S. Ambassador Bill Mahoney, died in April 2000 after 53 years of graceful marriage. She is survived by her children: William, Gladys, Mary, Richard, Eileen, Lawrence, Justin, Noel, and Sheila, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be Friday, April 1 at 9:30am, followed by the Rosary at 10:00am and Funeral Mass at 10:30am at Saints Simon & Jude Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be sent to Andre House, 213 S. 11th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85007.

I met Alice at 6 years old with my father. She was so kind to me and my sister. She let us ride and feed Sugar Plum, her favorite horse. I thought she was a magical woman and I'm proud to know her as a child. Her family was amazing and good to my father.

To Dick & All:

Your mom was a "magnificent human being", to quote a Broadway play.
In the early years at Andre House she was a generous and radiant presence. Her love of Dorothy Day and The Catholic Worker helped animate our loving service to our poor and homeless neighbors.

You are in my heart.

My deepest sympathy to all the family of Mrs. Mahoney. She and Mr. Mahoney were the kindest people I have ever known. They were a big part of all my family since my aunt "mama Lola" or as she was known to them "Nanita". I am so grateful to Mrs. Mahoney when she accompanied me when my mother passed away last year. My prayers are with her and her family. God bless her she was a great lady. I was sad the day you were laid to rest I knew not the reason why since I did not know of your passing until today I just know that there was reason to be sad. Too late to say thank you in person but not too late to convey my gratitude for all the good given to all my family. Thank you

To the family, especially Gladys:
My memories go back to our early days at Sts Simon and Jude, where our families were both closely involved in all the Church activities. I remember your mom's wonderful smile and know that she passed on to you a great foundation of faith and values that will always live on. My thoughts are with you today as you honor her life and devotion to God, the Church, and your family.

Alice was a real independent woman, yet also so gracefully social and devoted to her family. I feel lucky to have spent time with her and to have shared her wonderful secret farm oasis in the middle of a desert metropolis. For me, as a 12 year old horse-crazy girl, and beyond, she was and will always be, quite remarkable.

Dear Mahoney family,

I am so saddened to hear about Alice's passing. She was such a super person, so warm and loving and caring with such a sweet smile. I remember fondly so many fun times our families shared with so many laughs. My wife Ellen and I stopped by and about a year ago and we spent a couple hours catching up and I took some pictures as we sat in your living room and then walked around the property...so glad I did that. I, we, are all so much richer for knowing her and your family. Alice and Bill touched a lot of people and made our world a better place.
The Mahoneys are a great family and I will keep Alice and all of you in my thoughts and prayers. I'll have a mass said for your dear mother at the church in Old Town San Diego.

All the best,
Dan DeWan
