Memories and Condolences
for Jonathan Schiro

Not sure what to say?

July 22, 2011

Dear Steve, Theo, and Rhiana,
My head is still reeling from the tragic news about Joss. The Schiro family was and will continue to be a precious gift from my teaching days that has kept on giving me joy, inspiration and beautiful memories. The heaviness I feel in my heart resonates with grief for the loss of a life so gifted and giving. Upon receiving the news today via an E-mail from Vicki Massey, my thoughts have been searching for a way to comfort you and let you know I join in with your many family members, friends and acquaintances who have sent you condolences, love, and prayers to bring you peace and comfort. A smile still comes to my face when I think of Joss, his delightful humor, his creative drawings and other artful creations, and his ever inquisitive and creative nature and spirit. Joss wrote a beautiful weather poem when he was a student in my Grade 1 & 2 class at Mendoza Elementary. May the beauty of his young thoughts reach out to you and ease your pain. I am blessed to have been his teacher. Joss lives on in my heart.
Let the Weather Hug You
By Joss Schiro, 1997
Let the wind touch you,
soft like a petal from a flower
whooshing as you pass by.
Let the sun hug you,
keeping you warm.
Let the gentle wind
guide you to your home.
Do you hear the wind whisper?
“Come, come play with me now.”

Dear Steve, Theo, and Rihana,

I just found out about this last week from Marie Howland. It seems I am in shock over this news as it seems so incomprehensible. I can still picture Joss in ELP with his amazing brain and fun spirit! He was a gentle soul as well. I do not know the exact words which might give you comfort except that you have great family memories to bring you through hard times. I will keep your family in my prayers.
With love,

Joss,

I loved seeing you around campus. You were so easygoing but focused we could talk about everything from games to studies. The last time I saw you we talked about the different kind of micro-organisms you were studying and everything that goes on in the human body. I never would have imagined that's the last I would hear from you.

I'll miss you, Joss.

Dear Steve and Theo,
I didn't have the peace of mind to share one of my best memories of Joss during his funeral this afternoon, but I hoped it might give you just one more perspective on the warm, friendly personality of a boy we all loved in the Behavioral Lab. One Friday afternoon last spring I was particularly stressed about school work, and Joss suggested we go to Dunkin' Donuts on Mill for a quick break. I said it was very hot outside for a walk, and he said, "Don't worry, I know all the bus routes". I agreed to go, and it turned out that he knew the entire route and schedule by heart- when we missed our bus on the way back, he even knew what number was coming next. This little trip became a Friday tradition for us, to the end of the semester. When we bought our donuts, he always bought a soda to go with it. He really did have a sweet tooth!! Both donuts (sometimes as many as three) were always gone by the time the bus arrived to pick us up, and he would eat them very dramatically to tease me for saving mine for when we got back to lab. He usually left all the white powdered sugar or chocolate on his face just to bother me as well. He was quite good at getting under my skin, but he was better at making me laugh. Joss was brilliant, as everyone can agree, but I will remember most that he was as quick to laugh at himself as he was quick of wit. Steve and Theo, you are in my prayers, as is Joss, and I offer my deepest sympathy in this difficult time.

Joss... I'll miss your sense of humor, just like it says. I'll miss the awesome pictures and riding the bus on campus with you. I'll miss how I always had a friend when I saw you. Mainly I'll miss you.

My thoughts go with your family, especially Rihana. You'll all be in my prayers.

Joss -
You meant more to me than I think you ever knew. I wish I could have seen you more, I will never forget you and the year we spent in Economics together. I really did love you, kid. I'll always remember you. I cannot write all the words bursting from my heart, but if I could, I would.
