I was just talking about Bill with my husband yesterday when this invitation to leave a comment about Bill Scott's memory showed up in my email. I was talking to my husband about how gracious, gentle, smart, insightful, inspiring, and influential (for good) that Bill was. Quiet, unassuming, thoughtful, a good listener, Bill made you feel welcome and understood when you spoke with him. I (still) regard Bill as an always-remembered example of a good person very dedicated to using all that he had to accomplish great good. You felt, in talking with him, that all things were possible. I remain sorry that he is gone. Bill's presence, vision, and influence as an advocate for safety and injury prevention for people with disabilities at the national level is missed.

Dear Susan, The short time I knew Bill even though very sick, his love for family, friends and his community was so evident and inspirational. His positive attitude and strength exuded with every courageous breath. Before I even knew of his accomplishments and "his story" I felt that this was an exceptional man- how true that is! They say "behind every good man is a good woman"- I believe that to be true as well, your courageous, compassionate, loving and tender care for your husband was a precious and dear site to see. I wish you well in all that you do, I wish for you great strength and prosperity- ALL MY LOVE- Valerie Samuelson RN- Hospice Inspiris

Dear Susan, Bill was a generous and kind man who made everyone comfortable. Over the years, I've grown to appreciate his openness and humor more and more. He did much to advance the cause of disability (and human) rights just by being himself. Please stay in touch.

Dear Susan and other members of Bill's family: We have lost one of the best. It was an honor to work with Bill for 5+ years at the AZ Center for Law. He taught me so much about courage, grace, compassion, and love. I was happy we stayed connected for awhile after Jim and I moved to Santa Fe. My thoughts are with you all. Bill continues to be an inspiration to me. And boy, what a smile!!!!!!!!

Bill was first described to me as a "dynamic person" and, over our 10 year friendship, that is what I always saw. I was honored to learn from him, train with him and call him my friend. I miss him so much already but feel so blessed to have known Bill Scott. Continued prayers for Susan and the Family.

Met Bil at ASU in 1989. We worked together on the "Disabiliy 'Fest 90" and then when I was hired with the City of Phoenix he was involved with what is now called the Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues. He would talk about how Susan was such a great wife to him... Be blessed...

I first met Bill while working for the Maricopa Community Colleges as we implemented a Diversity Training Program. What began as a professional relationship turned into a wonderful friendship with a person that touched the hearts of anyone he encountered. What a wonderful person! So caring, so giving, so full of life! I will never forget his never ending smile and his laugh! It was an honor to be his friend and to have known someone so special. May peace be with his family during this time and that they know he was loved by so many.

I worked with Bill at the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest in the late 1980s. I was a young adult woman in my 20s, and fresh out of college. Bill was the director of the Client Assistance Program. He helped people navigate the Department of Economic Security's vocational rehabilitation system. He moved on when he started Abilities Unlimited. Bill exemplified what people with disabilities can accomplish. He inspired me so much. I recall enjoying a party at his home many years ago. I wish I had stayed in better touch. God bless you, Bill. I know the Lord greeted you with the words "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You will be missed. My condolences to Bill's wife and family.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Bill during the past seven years, through NFPA's Disability Access Review and Advisory Committee (DARAC). Bill is indelibly imprinted on my mind and heart. His smile lit up the room, his laugh infectious. Bill's presence was commanding, his leadership and intelligence evident at every turn. To Susan and all of Bill's family, I wish you comfort during this time of great sadness. Bill's life was an inspiration to all of us and he will never be forgotten.

I don't know what to say other than how sad I am that Bill is not with us, but in spiriit. When I got Lisa Braxton's email this afternoon, I sat back and remembered how Bill made me feel everytime I connected with him. He listened to you, respected what you had to say, always saw the humor in life and in people, and was always always perceptive, thoughtful, and informed. He set the standard for excellence as an advocate. We'll all miss you, Bill. (Karen Stroup, Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis).

Knowing and working with Bill over the years through National Fire Protection Association's Disabilities Access Review and Advisory Committee (DARAC) has been a tremendous systems change experience. Bill's efforts with DARAC has benefited untold numbers of individuals nationally. Susan, family and friends, now coping with this unexpected turn of events, can hopefully take some comfort knowing Bill shall continue live within each of us because he really did touch each of our hearts in so many different ways. I will miss him dearly; but, I shall not forget him and his unselfish contributions in making life better for us all.

I am very lucky to have shared the stage with Bill on several occasions, spreading messages about the importance of fire & life safety for our peers with disabilities. His patience and engaging mannerism sold people on our message in a way that we should all try to emulate. We have lost a dedicated advocate, leader and true gentleman, but the work he believed in will continue. My thoughts and prayers are with Susan and your extended family.

I am truly blessed to have known, worked and played with Bill for about seven years, all over the country, in many venues. There is a quote I love which says: “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.” Bill has left his footprints on my heart and changed me forever for the better. Susan, you and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers. That you for sharing this incredible man with the world! -Allan Fraser-
