TO MY MOM AND DAD:

THE BOND THAT ASHLEY AND I HAD WAS UNBREAKABLE...THE ONE THAT EVERY SIBLING RELATIONSHIP ENVY'S. SHE WAS MY BIGGEST CHEERLEADER AND MY NUMBER ONE FAN. IT IS HER THAT I THANK FOR MAKING ME A STRONGER, BETTER PERSON AND FOR THE COURAGE TO BE ABLE TO HOLD MY HEAD HIGH AND MARCH FORWARD NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE.

WHEN ASH AND I WERE YOUNG, SHE WAS ALWAYS THE INSTIGATOR AND I WAS THE RESPONSIBLE ONE. NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE THEN. WE GREW UP IN IOWA ON A GOLF COURSE THAT HAD A POOL AND A CLUBHOUSE JUST DOWN THE ROAD. OUR SUMMERS WERE CLASSIC! OUR PARENTS WOULD GO OFF TO WORK AND THEY WOULD TELL US THAT IF WE WERE GOING TO THE POOL, THAT WE NEEDED TO WALK OR TAKE OUR BIKES, AND WE WERE NOT TO GET ON THE GOLF CART! THEY WOULD LEAVE AND WITHIN 20 MINUTES, WE WERE IN THE GOLF CART AND HAD THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR IN REVERSE, PEELING OUT OF THE GARAGE. WE WOULD GO AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD, HONK THE HORN AND PICK UP ALL OF THE NEIGHBOR GIRLS. THERE WERE DAYS WHERE WE HAD OVER 10 PEOPLE LOADED ON IT AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT EVEN DROVE. WE WOULD SHOW UP TO THE POOL AND THE LIFEGUARDS WOULD GIVE US THESE LOOKS, LIKE TROUBLE HAD ARRIVED. WE WOULD SWIM FOR HOURS, GO TO THE SNACK SHOP AND RUN UP A CHARGE, GO TO THE CLUBHOUSE AND RUN UP MORE CHARGES WITH LUNCH AND DINNER. WE WOULD SIGN MY DADS NAME AND CRUISE HOME BEFORE THEY ARRIVED. EACH DAY THEY WOULD ASK US WHAT WE DID AND WHAT WE CHARGED. OF COURSE WE ALWAYS SAID THAT WE RODE OUR BIKES TO THE POOL AND WE ONLY HAD A "SNACK". IT WAS ALWAYS AN INTERESTING DAY WHEN THE BILL CAME EACH MONTH....WE HAD SOME CHARGES TO EXPLAIN!

ASHLEY WAS THE TOUGHEST PERSON I HAVE EVER KNOWN, AND ALSO THE PERSON WITH THE BIGGEST HEART. THE DAY SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, WE SAT AND CRIED FOR HOURS. BY THE NEXT MORNING SHE WAS MAKING PHONE CALLS AND TAKING CHARGE, DOING EVERYTHING SHE COULD TO STAY POSITIVE AND PUSH THROUGH A TERRIBLE SITUATION. IT IS THIS SAME ATTITUDE THAT GAVE HER THE LAST 16 MONTHS OF HER LIFE AND INSPIRED SO MANY OTHERS TO NOT LET THE WORST OF SOMETHING TAKE YOU OVER.

AFTER ASHLEY'S FIRST CHEMO TREATMENT SHE WAS ON THE HUNT FOR THE PERFECT WIG. BEING A COSMETOLOGIST, NOTHING WAS QUITE GOOD ENOUGH FOR HER AND SHE WAS REALLY UPSET BY THE PRICES OF WIGS. WHILE SHE COULD AFFORD THEM, SHE KNEW MANY OTHER PATIENTS COULD NOT. SHE WAS ALSO UPSET BY THE FACT THAT IT WAS HARD FOR HER TO FIND OUTLETS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CANCER. I'LL NEVER FORGET MY MOM AND I COMING HOME ONE DAY, ASHLEY HAD THE ENTIRE LIVING ROOM COVERED WITH BUSINESS CARDS AND HAIR. SHE TOLD US THAT SHE WOULD NOW BE MAKING WIGS FOR SOME OF THE FRIENDS SHE HAD MADE AND WAS GOING TO DROP CARDS OFF TO SOME OF THE LOCAL HOSPITALS. ON THESE CARDS SHE CANCER WEBSITES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO FIND RESOURCES AT AS WELL AS HER OWN PERSONAL CONTACT INFORMATION. I NEARLY COLLAPSED IN SHOCK. THERE WAS NEVER A MOMENT WHERE ASHLEY WASN'T THINKING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE AND TRYING TO HELP OTHERS TO COPE WITH THIS DIFFICULT THING THEY WERE EXPERIENCING. HER SELFLESSNESS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHY WE ALL LOVED HER SO DEARLY.

THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT I WILL MISS ABOUT ASHLEY. THIS YEAR I WILL HAVE NO ONE TO SNEAKILY UNWRAP AND RE WRAP CHRISTMAS PRESENTS WITH.......AND OF COURSE ACT SURPRISED WHEN WE OPEN THEM. VEGAS TRIPS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME, MOSTLY BECAUSE SHE WON'T BE THERE DANCING ON THE LUGGAGE RACK IN THE HOTEL AND HAVING THE BELL HOP OR A FRIEND PUSH HER AROUND. NIGHTS OUT ON THE TOWN WILL BE A LITTLE LESS CRAZY. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO NAME THE AMOUNT OF TIMES SHE TOOK OFF ON US. SHE KNEW SO MANY PEOPLE THAT BY THE END OF THE NIGHT WE WERE PLAYING WHERE'S WALDO, BECAUSE NO ONE COULD SEEM TO FIND ASHLEY. IT NEVER FAILED SHE WAS TALKING TO SOME RANDOM PERSON AND WE WOULD ALL BE HUDDLED UP TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO IT WAS. HER RESPONSE ON THE WAY HOME WAS ALWAYS "WHAT, I BUMPED INTO THEM AND JUST STARTED TALKING.....YOU GIRLS NEED TO BE MORE SOCIAL!" IT WAS THAT OUTGOING PERSONALITY THAT ATTRACTED ALL OF US TO HER.

WHEN WE FOUND OUT ASHLEY HAD CANCER, SHE SOMEHOW BECAME PRINCESS OF THE HOUSEHOLD. ANYTHING SHE WANTED, WE JUMPED. NONE OF US WERE SURE WHAT TO EXPECT AND WE WERE WILLING TO GRANT HER ANY WISH SHE HAD. WE EVEN BEGAN TO CALL HER PRINCESS...AND BELIEVE ME SHE LOVED EVERY BIT OF IT. THE DOG WAS JEALOUS FROM THE LACK OF ATTENTION...BUT ASHLEY DEFINITELY LOVED IT. SHE WOULD CALL US AND GIVE HER FOOD ORDER, BOSS US ROUND, HAVE US RUN HER ERRANDS, BUY HER CLOTHES, WHAT EVER SHE WANTED SHE GOT IT... AND NO ONE THOUGHT TWICE! AFTER HELPING HER FOR THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF, I BEGAN TO READ ASHLEY BETTER THAN SHE COULD READ HERSELF. SHE WOULD HAVE CHAPPED LIPS AND I WOULD HAND HER CHAP STICK. SHE WOULD HAVE A USED TISSUE IN HER HAND AND I WOULD HOLD MY HAND OUT TO TAKE IT FROM HER. IF SHE WANTED A PILLOW, I WAS BRINGING IT TO HER BEFORE SHE ASKED. I'LL NEVER FORGET THE HOSPICE DOCTOR BEING AT MY HOUSE THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. HE NOTICED THAT ASHLEY GOT EVERYTHING SHE WANTED AND FINALLY HE JOKINGLY ASKED HER WHO SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS. OF COURSE WE ALL LAUGHED. ASHLEY'S RESPONSE WAS THAT SHE WAS A PRINCESS. SHE THEN GOT THE CRAZY ASHLEY LOOK ON HER FACE AND ASKED IF HE WANTED TO SEE HER WAND. A BIT TAKEN BACK...AND SURPRISED, BUT HE SAID "SURE"! SHE THEN LOOKED DIRECTLY AT ME AND AS BOSSY AS POSSIBLE, SHE SAID CHRISTINA, GET MY WAND. I LOOKED AT HER AND SAID YES, MA'AM. SHE THEN SAID, "SEE" .........THEY EVEN GOT ME MY OWN WAND. MY MOM AND I USED TO TEASE HER AND ASK IF WE COULD USE THE WAND FOR AN HOUR AND SHE ALWAYS TOLD US NO!

I TOLD ASHLEY BEFORE SHE LEFT THAT I WOULD BE TAKING THE ROLE OF PRINCESS. I TOLD HER THAT WE WOULD CELEBRATE HER LIFE AND TALK FOR YEARS ABOUT WHAT A WONDERFUL PERSON SHE WAS. I ALSO TOLD HER THAT I LOVED HER, AND THANKED HER FOR ALL OF THE FUN TIMES AND GREAT THINGS SHE TAUGHT ME. TODAY I BEGIN LIVING THE REST OF MY LIFE FOR THE BOTH OF US. I PROMISED ASHLEY THAT I WOULD MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY DAY AND THAT I WOULD DO MY BEST TO MAKE HER PROUD. I LOVE MY SISTER MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THE WORLD AND SHE WILL ALWAYS HOLD A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART.

I LOVE YOU ASH AND I'LL SEE YOU AGAIN ONE DAY!

June 13, 2011

WHEN ASHLEY'S SISTER CHRISTINA ASKED ME TO SPEAK AT HER CELEBRATION OF LIFE I WAS TRULY HONORED. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE EASY CONSIDERING THROUGHOUT THE LAST 10 YEARS I HAVE VERY FEW MEMORIES SHE IS NOT PART OF. AS I SAT DOWN TO WRITE I REALIZED THAT NO MATTER WHAT I SAY HERE TODAY, WORDS CAN NOT FULLY EXPRESS WHAT AN INCREDIBLE PERSON ASHLEY WAS. SOMETHING THAT MIGHT HOWEVER IS TO LOOK AROUND THIS ROOM. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HERE TO CELEBRATE AND ALL OF OUR LIVES WILL FOREVER BE CHANGED JUST BY HAVING KNOWN HER.

ASHLEY'S REACTION TO HER DIAGNOSES WAS NOT WHAT ANYONE WOULD HAVE EXPECTED. ANY OTHER PERSON WOULD HAVE BEEN ANGRY OR BITTER BUT NOT ASHLEY. SHE STAYED STRONG, POSITIVE AND MOST OF ALL SHE STAYED TRUE TO WHO SHE WAS. I NEVER HEARD HER COMPLAIN ABOUT BEING "THE ONE WHO GOT CANCER", OR "WHY ME" SHE ACCEPTED THAT THIS WAS THE PATH FOR HER AND SHE WAS GOING TO FIGHT UNTIL SHE COULDN'T FIGHT ANYMORE! I LEARNED SO MUCH THROUGH HER COURAGEOUS 16 MONTH BATTLE. ONE OF THE THINGS SHE SAID TO ME BEFORE SHE PASSED WAS TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAID. THAT WAS HOW ASHLEY LIVED HER ENTIRE LIFE. IN HER 23 YEARS....SHE LIVED MORE THAN MOST PEOPLE LIVE IN A LIFE TIME! SHE DID NOT CARE IF PEOPLE DIDN'T LIKE WHO OR HOW SHE WAS, SHE WAS HERSELF THROUGH AND THROUGH AND NO ONE WAS GOING TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HER.

I HAVE SO MANY MEMORIES WITH ASH BUT ONE THAT REALLY STOOD OUT WAS JUST A SIMPLE NIGHT WHEN SHE STAYED OVER! ANYONE THAT KNEW HER WOULD KNOW THAT SHE LOVED TO SPEAK HER MIND! WE WERE JUST HANGING OUT IN MY ROOM, WHEN ASHLEY STARTED IN ABOUT HOW KIDDISH MY ROOM WAS AND HOW I WAS 16 YEARS OLD AND IT WAS TIME TO HAVE A GROWN UP ROOM! OF COURSE I ARGUED BACK AS USUAL I HAD NO SAY IN THE MATTER!! ASHLEY (OR SHALL I SAY PRINCESS) WAS VERY INSISTENT ON GETTING HER WAY! WELL ANYWAYS WITHIN AN HOUR HER AND MY BROTHER HAD COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED MY ROOM!! ASH WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO WOULD TELL YOU EXACTLY HOW IT WAS. SHE WAS NOT AFRAID TO HURT YOUR FEELINGS BECAUSE SHE KNEW HER HONEST OPINIONS WERE COMING FROM THE BOTTOM OF HER HEART!

ASH AND I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF BIRTHDAY'S TOGETHER BUT ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE ONES WAS HER 21ST! MAY 9, 2008. IT JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE THE SAME DAY AS A COUPLE OF OUR OTHER FRIENDS SO WE THOUGHT, WHAT BETTER WAY THAN TO CELEBRATE THEM ALL IN VEGAS! MY BROTHER RYAN AND I FLEW IN EARLY AND DECORATED THE ENTIRE ROOM!! IT WAS QUITE A JOB, BUT DEFINITELY WORTH IT! I STILL REMEMBER THE LOOK OF EXCITEMENT AND GRATITUDE ON HER FACE!! SO IF I HAD TO GUESS, I WOULD SAY THAT THERE WERE ABOUT 50 OF US FRIENDS THAT WEEKEND. ASH AND I HAD BEEN TO VEGAS MANY TIMES BEFORE THIS ONE...WE HAD IT DOWN. POOLSIDE ( AROUND NOON ) .........NAP ( ABOUT 3 ) ........NIGHT LIFE ( 5 ) AND BED ( SOMEWHERE AROUND 6 AM ) ASHLEY WAS ENERGY FILLED TO THE MAX! GO BIG OR GO HOME IS HOW WE DID VEGAS! IT WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF OUR BEST TRIPS, ONE THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THING ABOUT ASH WAS HER ABILITY TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH EVERYONE! SHE WAS SUCH A SOCIAL BUTTERFLY! NO MATTER WHERE WE WERE SHE KNEW SOMEONE! I HONESTLY COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW ANY ONE PERSON COULD KNOW SO MANY PEOPLE! I LOVED THIS ABOUT HER BECAUSE I NEVER HAD TO MEET MY OWN FRIENDS!! AS A LOT OF YOU KNOW, ASH AND I USUALLY CAME AS A PACKAGE. IF I WENT OUT WITH OUT HER THE QUESTION OF THE NIGHT WAS "WHERE IS ASH?" AND VICE VERSA! HER FRIENDS WERE MY FRIENDS, AND MY FRIENDS WERE HERS........IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE ONE OF US, WE WERE GONE!

ASHLEY'S LIFE WAS UNFORTUNATELY CUT WAY TOO SHORT. THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS SHE WANTED TO DO, SO MANY PLACES SHE WANTED TO GO AND SO MUCH MORE SHE WANTED TO ACCOMPLISH. I KNOW WE ARE ALL SITTING HERE, DEEPLY SADDENED THAT WE WILL NO LONGER HAVE HER IN OUR LIVES BUT WHAT WE NEED TO REALIZE IS THAT WE ARE STILL HERE. MY LIFE WITHOUT ASHLEY IS UNIMAGINABLE, BUT I AM GOING TO TRY MY BEST TO DO EXACTLY WHAT SHE WANTS ME TO DO. SUCK IT UP AND LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST. FEARLESS, HAPPY AND WILLING TO PUSH THROUGH EVERYDAY AND FIGHT FOR EVERYTHING I WANT. PEOPLE SAY THAT TIME HEALS EVERYTHING. I DISAGREE. TIME WILL NEVER COMPLETELY HEAL THE PAIN THAT WE ARE FEELING TODAY, BUT IT WILL GET EASIER. ONE THING I KNOW ABOUT ASHLEY IS THAT SHE WOULD KICK ALL OF OUR BUTTS FOR FEELING SORRY FOR HER. SHE WANTS EVERYONE TO REMEMBER HER FOR WHO SHE WAS! HONEST, CARING, COURAGEOUS, RESPONSIBLE, FUNNY, AND MOST OF ALL HER BEAUTIFUL FACE AND SMILE. SHE IS IN A BETTER PLACE, AND I HONESTLY BELIEVE AFTER EVERYTHING SHE HAS BEEN THROUGH, IN THE END SHE WAS AT PEACE!

I LOVE YOU SMASH

ASHLEY, MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER. YOU CAME INTO THIS WORLD A FIGHTER AND LEFT US WAY TO YOUNG AS ONE!

WHEN YOU WERE BORN YOU HAD A CLUB FOOT. THE DOCTORS PUT A CAST ON YOU. I REMEMBER YOU KICKING THE SIDE OF THE CRIB WANTING THAT THING OFF YOUR FOOT.

THEN CAME CANCER, NOV 30, 2009. YOU HAD ALREADY RESEARCHED IT AND KNEW BEFORE THE DOCTORS DID. ASHLEY PREPARED FOR THE BATTLE WITH SUCH DIGNITY AND GRACE. HERE I WAS WATCHING THIS AMAZING YOUNG LADY AT 22 YEARS OLD LIVING LIFE LIKE ONLY ASHLEY WOULD. NO MATTER HOW BAD IT GOT SHE ALWAYS HAD A WAY OF MAKING IT BETTER. YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR MADE US ALL LAUGH!

ASHLEY HAD A CONTAGIOUS SMILE AND BEAUTIFUL PERSONALITY THAT WAS AFFECTED BY ALL. A SOCIAL BUTTERFLY SHE WAS. A NEW FRIENDSHIP WOULD BLOSSOM DAILY. ASHLEY'S DESIRE TO HELP OTHERS WHEN SHE REALIZED NO ONE HER AGE HAD THE SUPPORT SHE MUCH WANTED AND NEEDED.

THEN THERE WAS CHRISTINA AND I. ASHLEY WOULD ALWAYS TELL ME " GET IT TOGETHER " MOM WHEN I WAS HAVING A MOMENT WATCHING HER SUFFER THRU THIS HORRIBLE DISEASE. ASHLEY WAS NOT AFRAID AND AT PEACE. SHE WAS MORE WORRIED ABOUT HOW WE WOULD BE AND WHO WOULD TAKE CARE OF US. ALWAYS THINKING OF OTHERS.

LIVE EVERYDAY LIKE IT'S YOUR LAST. ENJOY THE MOMENTS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED. LIVE LAUGH LOVE IS ASHLEY ALL THE WAY, AS WAS HOPE AND FAITH THAT GOT US ALL THRU AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO.

I LOVE YOU MY ANGEL. YOU WALK WITH AND BESIDE ME EVERYDAY!

LOVE MOM

You are such an inspiration to so many. I will never forget all the fun times we had over the years. From Mountain Ridge to Classic Beauty College, you were always so fun to be around. I wish we would have been able to hang out together,I am positive that we would have gotten along great! In meeting your friends and talking with you on line it was such an inspiration, you touched so many lives with your positive attitude, smile, laughter, and out going personality. I love the fact that people knew how you felt you didn't hold back (must run in the family LOL). It is truly wonderful the tremendous amount of lives that you touched in such a short lifetime, many that didn't get the pleasure of meeting you other than on line, I can just imagine your impact on those in Heaven! Watch over us and especially mom and Christina, they like you are wonderful strong women.
