I knew Kurt many years ago - in 1976. A poor college student in Phoenix, I was once again buying some parts for my Volkswagen bug, that had never ending issues. I struck up a random conversation with Kurt and he agreed to look at my car - from that day until I moved to Washington in 1978 the little car ran like a top. Over the years, we have sporadically kept in touch about our major life events - a phone call, a note in the mail, several phone calls. Always planned to have lunch someday, but our paths never crossed again. Almost got together when he passed through Seattle on his way back down to Phoenix, but my husband and I were in Wyoming. Kurt was one of those people you could just pick up where you left off. I woke up this morning thinking his birthday was coming up, decided to see if I could track him down - it's been years since we last spoke. I am in shock - at first I couldn't believe it was the same guy - he looked radically different the last time I saw him - but all the pieces fit. I am so sorry for his loss to his family - I can't help but wonder what happened? was he ill? did he have an accident? Funny how someone you have not heard from in years can suddenly leave a big hole in your soul when you find out they are gone forever. I always think of him on February 9th, and this year it will be with a heavy heart.

my brother ~

Kurt was the type of person that would walk into a bar full of strangers and within a short time become his lasting friends. Not quite the cookie cutter employee, Kurt started his own business in Phoenix, moved it to St. Louis, moved it to Payson, then back to Phoenix. Not one to become complacent, he panned for gold in Alaska numerous times. Although he didn't strike the mother lode in gold, his experiences would last his lifetime. Many of his experiences could never be told in mixed company, but in small groups of those who knew Kurt well, they will be remembered forever.

Part pirate, part mechanic, part gambler, Kurt could teach Charlie Sheen a few things. Kurt's tools weighed more than the Space Shuttle but he knew where everything was. Although, he was a master of Volkswagen repair, it did not stop him from screaming metric oaths and hurling equipment into the far corners of his shop when things went less than smooth. From his life size Bartles & James poster to his Zodiac inflatable boat, to his ample collection of Volkswagen stuff, a trip to Kurt's shop always brought out the amazement of a freshly opened pyramid.

A true entrepreneur, Kurt lived his life one day at a time and did not apologize for the way he acted. If the number of friends left behind represents anything, it would be the obvious positive effect Kurt had on the people lucky enough to meet him.

Even though I now sit with tears rolling down my face. There will always be a smile in my heart. We definitely had many laughs. I'm talking gut busters. Such a caring person is hard not to care about and believe me there are a lot of people care about you. I'm so happy I had that chance to be friends with someone as wonderful as you. Memories will always bring a smile to my face. Thank you Kurt for being you. Even more, thanks for being my friend.

Kurtis! My friendship with you was a seven year lesson in life that traveled farther than any baseball could ever be hit, or more miles than any bug be driven. The most important thing that I learned from you was this: it’s easy to be happy - all you have to do is want it. Thank you, for your thoughts and memories. Your friendship will always play an important role in my everyday life. Your strength and will to fight everyday was beyond amazing - it was way cool. --- Reggie

I don't know what I'm gonna do without you now. I was the happiest I've ever been with you, and now you're gone. We are still soulmates and I still love you with everything that I am. I miss you terribly. I still can't believe you're gone. I long for you (everything that is you). I ache for your touch, your kisses, your scent. I am so in-love with you and I want you back. I'll never understand why this happened to you. I would give anything to be able to go back to last september and change everything. You would still be here with me and we would be getting ready for our honeymoon. This is so hard to believe and I Am So Sorry My Love! So So Very Sorry. You are inside me til I see you again. Your Wife
