Wayne Smith Obituary

Smith, Wayne
Wayne Leon Smith unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 92 years old. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Wayne is survived by his three children Christene (Sowby), Steven Wayne, and Daryl (Lee), 16 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. His surviving siblings are Dale, Merril, and Norma "Sis" (Jensen). Wayne was born in Cleveland, Idaho, the fourth of 8 boys and one girl. After high school, Wayne served a mission for the LDS church in the Central States where he met his bride-to-be. Elma Brown. Elma and Wayne were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1947. Wayne proudly served his country during WWII in the Army. Four of his brother also fought, and one died in battle. Throughout his life, Wayne had many careers. He was a farmer, merchant, banker, truck driver, salesman, and an executive. In his spare time, Wayne loved working with wood. He made all sorts of decorative items from harvested desert ironwood trees. He fashioned billy clubs for the local police, and canes for the elderly, including himself. But he is best known for his extensive work with rocks. He made hundreds of items from his cut, carved, and polished stones, from bolo ties to tables, and is known in his community as the local rockhound. Some of his most meaningful work however, was in service in callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A staunch member of his Ward, Wayne was always willing to serve, even as a member of the bishopric at age 80. Services to honor Wayne begin with a visitation Friday evening from 6pm - 8pm, at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary 710 W. Bethany Home Rd Phoenix. Saturday viewing at 10 am, with ther funeral servcie at 11am at the LDS chapel 2222 N. 40th Street, Phoenix. The burial service will be Monday 11am at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd Phoenix. www.ALMoore-Grimshaw.com

April 15, 2011

When we were moving out of Phoenix we had boxes of rocks that had belonged to Jim's father who was also a rockhound. Wayne was so tickled to get them. Wayne & Elma were great people. I'm sure they are happy together again. Prayers for all your family. Jimmie & Barbara James
