Gilbert Bradley Obituary

Bradley, Gilbert Francis
passed away peacefully on Monday, April 11, 2011, at La Rosa Nursing Facility in Tucson, Arizona. Known as both "Gil" and "Brad," he worked for Arizona's Valley National Bank for more than 45 years, retiring as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board in October, 1982, and serving as a board member for another three years. Born on May 17, 1920, in Miami, Arizona, he started work for the Valley Bank in 1937 as a bookkeeper in the Miami Branch. On June 21, 1941, he married Marion Zelda Bebb at St. John's Episcopal Church in Globe, Arizona. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and became a pilot. On February 25, 1944, Brad and his crew flying a mission in the Sophisticated Lady were shot down over Yugoslavia, in the territory of Marshall Tito's Partisans. The Partisans guided them to a rescue air strip, traveling over mountain tops, through dense forests and around German camps. On April 3rd, they were evacuated. Brad and his crew were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for this mission. Their story appeared as a comic strip in The American Air Forces magazine, misidentifying their plane as the Pistol Packin' Mama, the plane they had regularly flown until it was shot down manned by another crew. Years later, Brad and Marion wrote up the story for The Journal of Arizona History, Winter, 1995. On leaving the service in 1945, Brad returned to the Valley Bank in Globe as Assistant Bank Manager. From there he, in his own words, worked "through all phases of banking." He was based in Tucson for sixteen years, first as the manager of the downtown branch and then executive vice-president of the Southern Region. Tucson honored him as Man of the Year in 1963. He left Tucson for Phoenix in 1973 to become President of the Valley National Bank. In 1978 he was appointed to the Federal Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve System, and in 1979 he was named one of the top three chief executive officers in American banking by Financial World magazine. He retired fully in 1985. After leaving the bank, he and Marion enjoyed an active retirement in Phoenix, Arizona, and La Jolla, California. Since 2001, they have lived in Tucson at Santa Catalina Villas and La Rosa. Brad is survived by Marion, his wife of almost 70 years, his three sons, Larry, Richard, and Steven, and a sister, Joyce Kaapke. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 29, 2011, at Grace-St-Paul's Episcopal Church, 2331 East Adams Street, Tucson, Arizona, 85719, followed by a reception in McBride Hall at the church. Flowers may be sent to the church, or, in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Adair Funeral Homes-Avalon Chapel (520-742-7901)

What an exceptional man Gil was and will always be for many of us who were guided by his examples. He was a leader that care for his employees, one who was always there for anyone of us at Valley National Bank--he made the Bank enjoyable, and ensured equal treatment for all. I worked on many projects directly with Gil and his top management staff. He and Mr. Mayer were, and will always be what made our joys enjoyable. A man never to be forgotten. GOD must be blessing Gil, and family. Claudio Clark

I was a branch manager in Tucson when Gil was in charge of the southern division of Valley Bk in the 60's and 70's. He was a wonderful leader and great guy in every way. I was fortunate to have known him and will always remember him fondly.

I feel very blessed to have known Gil for the years that we were neighbors in Tucson beginning 1964. He always demonstrated great family values and was very welcoming to me when I came over to visit his kids. I will always have fond memories of him. He will be missed.

Even though it has been many years since
we have been in touch with Gil, we remember his gentlemanly ways and his support for the U of Arizona.

In the 1960's I grew up with his second son, Rick, and spend many happy hours at the Bradley household. Mr. Bradley (Gil) was a wonderful family man, and a good father. I was lucky to have known him.

As a retired First Interstate banker, I met Gil at various meetings in Phoenix, and was always struck that he was such a nice man. Always a smile and handshake. Our prayers are with the family.
