Harry Phillips Obituary

Phillips, Harry Ashwill
died March 26th after a lengthy illness. He was born in Phoenix on July 6, 1929, at the old St. Joseph's Hospital (4th St. & Polk), to Harry & Ethel Phillips. Graduating in 1943 from Emerson Elementary and in 1947 from Phoenix Union High, he received a scholarship to Harvard University which in his words "changed my life". Graduating from there in 1951 Magna cum Laude, he entered Harvard Law School. Taking a break from his studies, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in northern Japan translating Russian and also learning Japanese, after which he returned to Harvard to receive his law degree. On January 3, 1959, he married the love of his life Fe Jayme. For 35 years he was associated with Halcon International in New York as a corporate lawyer specializing in contracts and then in Houston with Texas Eastern. Upon retirement Harry & Fe settled in Scottsdale, spending summers in Vancouver, B.C. Always the scholar Harry cherished his impressive collection of books and classical music. Intrigued by all the latest in electronics, he mastered computers from their inception and was impatient with anyone who had not. Recently, he also became an avid bridge player. Harry was proud of his memberships in the New York Athletic and Harvard Clubs, as well as his black belt in Judo. Survivors include his wife and four children: Harry J. of Scottsdale, Mary of California, James (Cathy) of New York and Patty (Chris) Garrison, also of New York, five grandchildren: Evan Phillips, Alexandria and Victoria Phillips, and Olivia and Amanda Garrison and his sister Brenda Phillips Whitney, Phoenix. A memorial service will be held on his birthday, July 6th, at the Grayhawk Country Club.
