Arlene Bateman Obituary
A loving wife and mother, died peacefully on April 17. She was 84, born on Feb.13, 1927, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Rulon and Genevieve Shepherd. She moved to Mesa in 1937, and throughout her life served the communities she loved. She graduated from Mesa High School in 1934, where she served as Student Body Vice President. She earned a BA at BYU, where she met her husband, Maurice B. Bateman, who preceded her in death on March 24, 2011. They were happily married for 63 years. She was a long-time teacher with the Mesa Public Schools, and retired as an English teacher at Westwood High School in 1983. Arlene was a life-long learner with an intense curiosity, and was active in many organizations such Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Simada Literary Group. Long active in the arts, she produced, directed and acted in many local theatre productions. For many years, she and her husband produced the popular Easter pageant at the Mesa LDS Temple. She was named Mesa's Artist of the Year in 1969, and Mesa's Outstanding Citizen in 1981. She was honored with an Emeritus Award from BYU in 2002. Arlene was an avid traveler, and with Maury explored the world. A lifelong member of the LDS Church, she held many leadership positions, and with her husband served two missions in South Africa. Arlene is survived by her children, Kathryn Nunes (Robert); Craig Martin (deceased); Paul Tracey; Maren Showkeir (Jamie); Julianne Kravetz (David); and Laura Boelter (Richard). She has 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brothers Kenneth Shepherd (Charlotte); and Douglas Shepherd (Carolee). She was preceded in death by her brother, David R. Shepherd. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mesa LDS 25th Ward chapel, 848 N. Westwood. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. McDonald, and one hour prior to the service at the ward building. Contributions can be made to the Rulon T. Shepherd scholarship fund or Hospice of the Valley.

Mrs. Bateman - Although I didn't have the pleasure of knowing you personally, your memory lives on in your granddaughter, Riesa. She is a remarkable woman and I know that your presence in her life was instrumental in the wonderful person that she has grown into. May God bless you and keep you always.

As I read your journal entry last Sunday, I was reminded of my own mother's passing. She was an avid genealogist and had done temple work for so many. As my sister and I sat in her hospital room sorting our feelings after she passed, we looked at each other and said that we thought we were missing the "party". I'm sure you must have similar feelings as you realize the great rejoicing that awaited your dear mother. She has been a powerful influence to so many. I thought of her again as we shared the great message of the atonement last night with dear friends at the pageant. I wish I could grow up to be like her in some small way.

Mrs. Bateman was my 10th grade English teacher at Westwood High School. She was a wonderful teacher and one that I'll never forget. She took the time to encourage me to do better in my schoolwork. I'll always remember her heartleft reading of John Gunther's "Death Be ot Proud" to the class. My sympathies to her family for their loss.

Juli, I'm thinking of you and know these are difficult times. A cousin once said to me on the occasion of my own mother's death, "You will never get used to it, but you will learn to live with it." I found that to be profound and true.

I am thankful to have known Arlene and will miss her greatly. My heart goes out to all the Bateman family at this time, as it is hard to loose your parents. Her sweet spirit lives on. I can picture her wonderful husband taking her hand in his and leading her on to a better world. Thank goodness for Heavenly Fathers plan that keeps our familes eternally sealed together. In December when Sister Pitts and I were visiting teaching Arlene..she gave me her book since I didn't even know she had written one. I have found myself too busy to read,.. but will make time now. Until we meet again Arlene.

I will miss my sweet aunt so very much. She is wonderful in so many ways. I loved to listen to her tell of experiences she's had. I loved being around her. she was a beautiful bright light. I loved her laugh and little giggle. i can still hear it in my mind.
I am so sorry for all her dear family. I know how hard this must be. I love you all so much, and will continue to keep you close to my heart and in my prayers!!
