Matthew Scanlon Obituary

Scanlon, Matthew Paul "Pat"
78, passed away on April 15, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on May 16, 1932 in Dawson, New Mexico to Matthew and Mary Scanlon. He attended Harvard University on full scholarship, graduating in 1953. After college he served in the United States Army from 1953-55, stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Following his service he began his lifelong career with Phelps Dodge Corporation. Pat came from a Phelps Dodge family. His mother and father had both worked at the Phelps Dodge Mercantile store in Dawson, and from an early age Pat worked there too, starting with a job as a carryout boy. At the beginning of his adult career he worked in the mines, and gradually moved into the area of labor relations, where he spent much of his career. He will be long remembered as an exemplary, fair-minded negotiator for Phelps Dodge, who was able to forge trusting and respectful alliances with his counterparts on the labor and union side. As his career progressed he assumed a great deal of responsibility for Phelps Dodge's communication efforts, particularly in the early years of environmental awareness during the 1970s and 1980s. He retired from Phelps Dodge as a vice president in 1988. Pat is survived by his loving wife Judy Sisto Scanlon; brother Bill; sister Mary Ruth; son Matthew; daughters Kathleen, Mary, and Sylvia; cousin Jerry; sister-in-law Lucille Mosca; daughter-in-law Monica; sons-in-law Tim, Charles, and Brad; grandchildren Marshall, Leo, Henry, Juanita, Genevieve, Kayla, Brad ("L.B."), and Will; nieces Theresa, Denise, and Lorraine; plus extended family. Pat's wisdom and joyful approach to life will be forever in our hearts, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 22 from 5-8 p.m. at Hansen Chapel, 8314 N. 7th Street, Phoenix. Please consider a contribution to the American Heart Association.

I am sorry to hear of Pat's passing. We were neighbors in Dawson and I remember him as the intelligent young man who went away to college.
My condolences on your loss.
