Elizabeth Burgoyne Obituary

Burgoyne, Elizabeth Marie (Betty)
With her family at her side, Elizabeth Marie Burgoyne passed away Monday, April 18, 2011. Elizabeth was born June 3, 1936 in Erie, PA, to Constantine and Sophie Brumboy. Elizabeth attended St. Mary's Grade School, St. Benedict's Academy and Mercyhurst College. On July 7, 1956, Elizabeth married Bernard Joseph Burgoyne at St. Mary's Church, Erie. They moved to Mesa, AZ in 1969. Always the student, Elizabeth received her Library Technician degree from Mesa Community College in 1975. From 1977-1981 she worked in Mesa Public Schools as a Library Technician. In 1992 she was awarded a Bachelor of General Studies degree from Northern Arizona University. After she retired, she volunteered with Mesa Public Library, Christ the King Catholic Church, as a mentor in Mesa Public Schools, participated in New Frontiers at MCC, tutored adults in English and participated in the Women's Health Initiative conducted by the Dept. of Health and Human Services. As a member of Friendship Forces, she opened her house and made longtime friends of visitors from other countries. Family, friends, traveling and books were her greatest loves. Elizabeth was always looking forward to showing out of town guests the charm of Arizona as well as learning as much as she could about the places she visited. An excellent photographer, she has many filled photo albums of travels and family events. Friends described her as always friendly, positive, caring, intelligent and a pleasure to be with. She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard, her parents, sister, and aunt. Surviving are her children Mary Beth Burgoyne (Ken Brockman), Brian Burgoyne (Kelley), Ellen Thiele (Mark), Ann Vigneux (Joseph), Joseph Burgoyne (Debbie), Patty Diedrick (Terry), sixteen grandchildren, one sister-in-law, one uncle, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Marybeth,Ellen,Ann, Brian, Joesph and Patty. I am so sorry for your moms passing. I was out of the country at the time of her service. I wish I was here to come and give my personal condolences. Your mom was like a second mom to me growing up. Man did we try to pull stuff over on her...but of course she always knew. One great lady will be missed dearly on earth but she now resides in the house of the Lord and in a much happier place with no pain and suffering. God bless all of you and you extened family. Love from Karlene Abreu Besmer.

Dear Patty, Ellen, family....I am so sorry to learn of your mothers passing. I never really knew Betty until a few short years ago when she would travel to Erie to look after Aunt Frances. During that time, I realized I had a family out west I never really knew...but were such lovely people! Your mom was so sweet and funny! Since I met her she always sent me a birthday card, and I was surprised to get a phone call from her this year in March on my birthday. It meant so much to me. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. She will be sadly missed.

Betty was one of the first friendly faces I saw when I came to Mesa College and she was a pleasure to work with. She was a friend to students as well.

Mary Beth and Family,
We were proud to have known your Mother for most of her life. I especially remember a recent visit to the Monastery when she toured our renovated chapel and we spent some special time together.
