Nylis Johnson Obituary

Johnson, Nylis Skousen
Nylis Skousen Johnson, 87 years young, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. Nylis was born January 14, 1924 in Chihuahua, Mexico. She was "the baby" of 12 children born to Daniel Skousen and Sarah Ann Spilsbury. As she peacefully slipped from mortality to the other side, she was again reunited with her dear husband Thomas W. Johnson. They were blessed with four wonderful children; Thomas Jr. (Helena), Robert (Vicky LaRitchie), Daniel and Noma (Steve Faller), 8 grandchildren, with 5 spouses and 11 great-grandchildren. Nylis is also survived by her sister, Rita Johnson (Mexico). Nylis, who was also known as "Nonnie" by many, and was a stranger to no one as she would spark conversation both in Spanish and English to all. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints her entire life. She loved the gospel and shared it with many as she served a mission for the church earlier in her life. Nylis was very outgoing, enthusiastic about life and a pleasure to be around. She loved playing games of all sorts. She golfed, bowled, played volleyball and had a passion for tennis. She enjoyed traveling and being with her family. Funeral services will be held at 11A.M., Tuesday, April 26 at the Thunderbird Ward, 4242 E. Waltann. Preceding the service will be a viewing beginning at 10A.M.

Heaven just got another shining star with Nylis's passing. I am so sorry to read of this. Nylis knew no strangers, and it was the unique manner in which she led choir in the old Phoenix East Stake wards that I fondly remember. I asked her about the nifty little foldable baton one day at a church function. She told me her husband, Tom, had gotten it off a junked car--the baton was a broken radio antenna. She never came to church without that little baton!

I know you and your family will miss Nylis. It does not seem possible that she has gone to her heavenly home. While I am sad, I know she is happy in Heaven with her husband and all loved ones that have gone before her.

My prayers and condolences to you,

Ronda

My thoughts and prayers go with you. Even though we are cousins and we don't know each other very well, our mothers knew each other well. Imagine the BIG reunion taking place at this time.
