Albert Maki Obituary

Maki, Albert J. "Abbie"
age 90 of Surprise, AZ, died Wednesday April 20, 2011 at the Chaparral Winds Retirement Center. He was born in Hancock, MI on Aug. 28, 1920 the son of Alexander and Matilda (Tossava) Maki. After graduation from Hancock High School he attended Michigan College of Mining & Technology (now Michigan Tech) in Houghton, where he was senior class president and captain of the hockey team for 3 years. He was later elected to the Michigan Tech Hall of Fame and served as a trustee for the Michigan Tech Trust Fund. Al did post-graduate work at the University of Cincinnati, UCLA, the University of Kansas, and Yale University. Al served on a submarine in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a registered professional engineer; a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics; listed in Who's Who in Engineering (1959) and Who's Who in Aviation & Aerospace (1983). He had been employed at General Electric, North American Aviation, AVCO Research Corp., Centex Corp, Brunswick Corp., and after retirement worked as a consultant. He was active in community affairs during his working life, and following retirement to Arizona in 1984. Al was married to Beatris L. (Ingraham) Maki on Oct. 10, 1941 in Detroit. She survives along with a brother, Wilbert Maki; a sister, Ruth Jurva; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Alfred Maki. No Arizona services are planned at this time. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery in St. Joseph County, Michigan. Memorials are suggested to the Michigan Tech Engineering Department, 815 R.L. Smith Bldg., 1400 Townsend Dr., Houghton, MI 49931-1295. Arrangements were by the Eickhoff Funeral Home of Mendon. Abbie's sister,Ruth. and I share this loss of her brother Abbie with Bea. We will always remember the great visits we had with Bea and Abbie during our winters in Arizona. We know Abbie is up there in heaven with the rest of the relationship and we look forward to him greeting us when it;s our time to make that heavenly journey May God grant you his Peace and Blessing Bea. Our forever Love, Ruth and Roy Jurva and family.
