Mabel Roer Obituary

Mabel Marie Adams Roer April 6, 1921 - April 26, 2011 Mabel passed into the arms of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the morning of Thursday, April 26, 2011, surrounded by her family. The youngest of five children, Mabel was born to Zachary Taylor and Ida Beatrice Adams April 6, 1921 in Lordsburg, New Mexico. At the age of 4 Mabel and her family moved to Arizona, settling in Phoenix, which became her home for the rest of her life. Mabel attended Phoenix Union High School where she was active in the music and theatre departments. Following graduation, Mabel worked for Mt. Bell Telephone company and volunteered many hours at Phoenix's Orphanage. At the outbreak of World War II, she was employed by Southern Pacific Railroad, routing military troop trains through Phoenix to their final destinations. After her marriage to cattleman, Bill Roer, in 1941, she continued to pursue her passions of music, voice, public speaking and leadership training. She was an early supporter and promoter of what would become the Phoenix Symphony. She was elected to the position of President of Phoenix Civic Light Opera Guild and its successor, Phoenix Musical Theatre Guild. As President, she oversaw the mounting of several musicals each season as well as numerous fund-raising and charitable events. In 1958 Mabel completed the Dale Carnegie course in Effective Speaking, Leadership Training and Human Resources. She went on to lend her time and support to the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, The Cancer Charity Ball and the Reading Reform Foundation. Her love of life, learning and her Lord inspired every life she touched. By far, the greatest of her many gifts was that of being a loving, kind and nurturing mother and grandmother. During her formative years, Mabel and her family were active members of Central Christian Church in downtown Phoenix, later attending its affiliates, First Christian Church in northeast Phoenix and, ultimately, Chaparral Christian Church in Scottsdale. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Zachary Taylor and Ida Beatrice Adams; her brothers, Zachary Adams, Jr., Glenn Adams, Bob Adams and Paul Adams; her daughter, Kathleen Roer and her former husband and father of her children, Bill Roer.
