Jeanette Bernsten Obituary

Bernsten, Jeanette
Born on November 24th, 1919, in Excelsior Springs, MO., Jeanette Bernsten of Phoenix, AZ, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family members, on the evening of April 25, 2011, at the age of 91. One of Jeanette's final acts on this earth was to open the door for the angel Elijah during the Passover Seder. Weak and fully aware of her condition Jeanette performed this sacred act with the grace, determination and courage that defined her life. A few days later the angels came for her. Jeanette was a kind and gentle person who never failed to show unconditional love for her family and friends. There was nothing Jeanette wouldn't do for a member of her family and she continued to provide that love, wisdom and support even in her final days. Jeanette had no meaness in her. It was this unique quality along with her humility and humor that endeared her to everyone she met from the oldest friend to the newest aquaintance. Jeanette will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to knwo her. Jeanette was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years Morris Bernsten, her adoring son Barry H. Bernsten and her grandson Barry H. Bernsten, Jr. Jeanette is survived by her daughters Marcia Hungerford (Wayne) and Helene Heckman, her sons Paul Bernsten and Richard Bernsten, grandchildren Michael Beram (Marianne), Anthony Beram (Maria), Nicholas Beram (Ada), Theresa Heckman, David Heckman (Sarah), Mandy Heckman and many more great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren. My Dear Aunt Jan,

Thank you for teaching me how to knit those kitchen cloths. I still use them today. We had fun while you were teaching me. You were always very sweet to me. I'm glad we were able to see you last month. I wonder who you will be teaching next up there...
Love,
Judy Shore

My Aunt Jan was truly a gracious and kind woman. She handled herself with grace and dignity through everything life threw at her. I admired and respected her more than anyone ever knew. May she rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences go out to her whole family.

One night a few years ago Jan as I knew her called my cousin Dee and offered tickets to a show, and she said why don't you bring your cousin me with you. We attended other events with Jan and she was always a classy person, nice to be around, and she treated me as if I was a member of her family. We have lost a great lady, but heaven has received a great lady.
