William Inglehart Obituary

Inglehart, William Almon
age 79, died in his home in Phoenix, Arizona with his family at his side on April 24, 2011, after a lengthy battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on December 1, 1931 to Helen and Gerald Inglehart, Bill was the first of their four children. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Glencoe, Illinois. He attended New Trier High School where he was active in wrestling, winning all of his matches. He attended Purdue University where he joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In 1955 he joined the Army and served as a special agent in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps. Upon discharge from the Army he returned to college and graduated from the University of Arizona in 1958. He was a member of Mensa International. Bill was a successful, driven businessman and worked his way up the ranks at the Walgreens Company before joining GC Services Corporation in Houston, Texas where he served as President until 1988. He then served as President of Payco American Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until he retired in 1991 and moved to San Juan Capistrano, California. In 1996 he moved to Desert Highlands in Scottsdale, Arizona, and then to Camelback Mountain. During his years in Houston, Texas, Bill was an avid runner and completed marathons in Houston, San Francisco and Chicago. He was a torch bearer for the 1984 Olympic Torch Relay. He traveled extensively and in 2002 he accomplished a goal of visiting all seven continents when he and his son reached the South Pole together on Christmas Day, 2002. An exceptionally witty, friendly and pleasant man, Bill had numerous friends around the globe who will miss him. None were more important to him than his soul mate and the love of his life, Teri Hampson of Scottsdale, Arizona, who made the final years of his life so very full and happy. Bill is survived by his son, William Almon Inglehart III of Henderson, Nevada, and his daughter, Tamra Inglehart Gorman, her husband John Joseph Gorman IV, and their two children Ryleigh Helene Gorman and John Joseph Gorman V, of Austin, Texas, and the families of his siblings, Ronald and Marita Inglehart of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jerry Inglehart and Christie Barber of Evanston, Illinois and Jane Inglehart Kase of Appleton, Wisconsin. A private family memorial service will take place in Wisconsin in July. For those wishing to remember Bill, we suggest making a contribution in his name to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 811 West Evergreen, Suite 204, Chicago, Illinois 60642

I worked at GC Services from 1977 through 1988 in the law department. I really admired Mr. Inglehart. To share a memory, I once was allowed to drive his Mercedes somewhere ... can't remember where! ... but he always treated me with respect. I just learned of his passing and am sorry that I didn't know earlier. God bless his family.

For many years Jerry and I spent a couple of winter months in Scottsdale near Bill. Bill loved the Sonora desert and the three of us walked many a canyon and hilltop trails. A highlight was to see the blooming of the spring flowers. I also fondly remember the many natural and historical treasures we explored together. We ambled up to Pueblos, along old Indian Trails as well as Stagecoach Trails. We toured Canyon de Chelley, Karchner Caverns, Sedona and the Biosphere near Tucson. We even drove to see the original London Bridge at Lake Havasu- (Miller's Folly?). Bill, Jerry and I also crawled into the 'belly' of a B-17 Flying Fortress which flew low over Scottsdale and the valley for a 'look from above'. One of my fondest memories is when we sat on the patio halfway up Camelback Mountain, watching the setting sun color the mountains across the valley from light brown to orange, then red and deep violet, before turning dark while the streetlights came on one by one. Bill would sip his Martini, Jerry a beer and I a glass of sweet Gewuerztraminer, which Bill always had ready for me. But what I will miss most of all are the conversations and reminiscences the brothers shared. Christie Barber, Evanston.

My most memorable memory was riding in a golf cart with Mr. Inglehart and Tamra going to see his new home in Desert HIghland. It was on a golf course and golf balls were coming at us from all sides. He was not phased. I know he will truly be missed by his family and friends, with love, Julie (houston, tx.)

Bill was truly a great man and will be greatly missed. I learned a lot from him which helped me tremendously in both my professional career as well as my personal life. He helped countless number of people! He always was a competitor and handled himself with dignity and Grace. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

You were such a good man, Bill. Kind, generous, brilliant, selfless, and loving. I will miss your overly-descriptive stories, witty humor, and optimism even when all of the chips were against you. Our whole family will truly miss you...
