Richard Underwood Obituary

Underwood, Richard Mason
80, passed away April 24, 2011 in Payson, Arizona. He was born January 8, 1931, in California. Richard was married for 50 years to Marilyn Joan Underwood, who predeceased him in 2001. They made a loving, secure home for their family, where everyone was welcome. Richard was very generous and tender hearted. He loved to surprise his family with extravagant gifts. He had a quirky and quiet sense of humor that could take you by surprise. When he and Marilyn first were married, he worked 3 jobs to make ends meet, and he continued to work hard to support his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren, Jen, Russ, Dorothy, Sarah and Matthew, and his great grandchild, Caleb. He thought they were wonderful - beautiful, funny and smart. Richard loved the beauty of nature, especially the mountains, and lived in Sedona and Flagstaff before moving to Payson. Richard was a skilled woodworker who made beautiful frames, clocks and boxes. He was especially proud of the grandfather clock he made. Richard loved Elvis, and eating peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwiches. Richard, also known as Dad, Papa, Grandpa and Great Grandpa will be remembered with love and sadly missed by his children and their spouses - Kathryn and Patrick Underwood Murphey, Rod and Pam Underwood, Mark and Julie Underwood, his grandchildren and their spouses - Jen and Rodger Schultz, Russ Underwood, Dorothy and Kyle McGatlin, Sarah Underwood and Matthew Underwood and his great grandchild - Caleb Schultz. Some of Richard's good friends were furry, and his best friend, Charly, the chocolate lab, will miss him and remember many good times of dog walks and broccoli treats. XOXO
