Perry, Joe Fletcher
Fletcher Joe Perry, "Joe", passed away in Tempe, AZ on April 25, 2011 at the age of 84 years old. Joe was born on January 22, 1927 to Fletcher Lee and Laurah Perry in Stevens Arkansas. After attending Compton Jr. College and serving in the United States Navy, Perry went on to play 14 seasons for the 49ers and two for the Baltimore Colts as a fullback. He remains San Francisco's all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Perry was the first player to ever record consecutive 1,000 yard rushing seasons. He finished his career with 9,723 rushing yards on 1,929 carries (5.0 avg.) with 71 touchdowns on the ground, while adding 2,021 receiving yards on 260 catches and 12 touchdowns through the air, in 181 games played. During his career, Perry broke the NFL record for most career rushing yards, a total that was later eclipsed by Jim Brown. Joe Perry, along with his team mate Leo Nomellini was the first of the San Francisco 49ers to be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969. Perry was a member of "The Million Dollar Backfield," which remains the only backfield to have all four of its members enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Perry also has the honor of being enshrined in the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, The Black Sports Hall of Fame, The African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame and just recently the Compton College Tartar Athletic Hall of Fame. Joe is survived by his wife of 26 years Donna Marie Perry of Chandler, AZ, son Jon Fletcher Perry of Los Angeles, CA, daughters Joanne Frazier of Sacramento, CA, Denise Simmons of Flower Mound TX, Karen Jo Perry of Hayward, CA, and Gabrielle Vasseur of Mesa, AZ. He had 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by a son Michael Joseph Perry in 1995 and a daughter Laura Delilah Perry in 1967. A memorial service will be held in both Arizona and California: ·Arizona: 11 am on May 7th at the SGI Phoenix Cultural Center 1930 E. Myrtle Ave., Phoenix, AZ. California: 1pm on May 21st at the Morgan Auditorium, S.F.
