Joanne Cowden Obituary

Cowden, Joanne P.
COWDEN, Joanne P. of Glendale, AZ passed away on May 4, 2011. Joanne Palmer Cowden left her earthly body to be with the Lord on May 4th, 2011. Joanne was born in Raton, New Mexico. She lived in New Mexico and Colorado before moving to Houston, Texas when she was four years old. Joanne lived in Houston until she graduated from high school. She then attended a trade school to learn to be a telegrapher for the railroad. She was a pioneer in women's rights by learning and performing a job that was traditionally a man's position before World War II. Joanne was working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in South Texas when she met the love of her life, Willam E. ("Bill") Cowden, and they were happily married for 62 years before he proceeded her in death almost two years ago. Bill and Joanne lived and worked in various locations in Texas, Arizona, and California before retiring in Glendale. Joanne worked mostly as a church secretary at several locations over these years. She was an active member of her church, having taught Bible Study for more than 50 years. Joanne is survived by her son Karl (& wife Cheryl), son Keith (& wife Suzanne), daughter Kathleen Penberthy (& husband Butch), and one grandson Cody Penberthy. Other surviving family members include Aunt Wylma King, sister-in-law Edna Jo Palmer, brother-in-law John E. Cowden, one brother David Stephens, and various nieces and nephews in South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Alaska. Her family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley for their excellent and loving care of our mother during her final days on this Earth. A funeral service will be held at the First Southern Baptist Church at Sahuaro Ranch, 10250 North 59th Avenue, in Glendale on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 11:00 am, proceeded by a visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Immediately afterwords, she will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Veterans National Memorial Cemetery. Karl, Keith, and Kathleen I want to extend my condolences to you. I am sorry to be late, but I didn't know Joanne was not with us anymore. I called today because it was Bill's birthday and found out about Joanne. I worked with Bill many years at Bob Allen's, Raymondville, Texas.

I didn't get to see my Aunt Joanne very much over the last years. But I am so glad I saw her one more time a little over a year ago. I will always remember her laugh and her humor, it was a Palmer thing, lol, and all the stories she told of my dad. Love you and will miss you.
