George Rose Obituary

Rose, George Paget
October 8, 1931 - April 28, 2011. The soul of George Paget Rose, former Calgary developer, history buff & avid golfer, has left this mortal coil for the company of those past departed. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, he passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona on April 28, 2011 with friends and family at his side. George was his own creation, an acknowledged master of almost anything he set his mind to and a self-educated man who aspired to knowledge and success. As a residential developer in Calgary from 1955 to 1981, he conceived and oversaw the construction of the ambitious Brae Glen townhome community, as well as numerous apartment buildings and private homes. On his retirement in 1981, he moved with wife Ruth to Scottsdale to begin a 25 year passion for the game of golf. Throughout his life, much of his reading included historical volumes on Scotland & England, biographies of great men like Winston Churchill and epic events of the Second World War, the Battles of Trafalgar & Waterloo and many others. He was fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage, and whenever Grandpa George had a Pipe Band playing at top volume, his grand-children knew that some form of "How the Scots Invented the World" would likely be up next. We now mourn our great loss and reflect on a life well lived, and as his favorite poet Robert Burns once wrote, "…A Man's a Man for a' that…". George is predeceased by his dear wife Ruth and brother Murray and survived by daughter Deborah Kathrens (Martin), sons Grant (Darla) and Scott (Cheryl), 9 grand-children & 1 great grand-daughter, brother Don (Maxine), his best friend and "Angel on Earth" Peggy Blake and his devoted canine companion Angus. The Family wishes to thank all of George's many friends and caregivers for their selfless acts of kindness during his recent years of failing health. Please forward condolences via e-mail to [email protected]. If so desired, memorial tributes may be made to a charity of choice in George's name.A celebration of George's life will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona on Saturday, June 18th at 2:00 PM at the Camelback Golf Club - Member's Lounge - 7847 N. Mockingbird Lane.

Debbie, Grant and Scott,

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your Dad. I was in Phoenix in January and tried to find a number for your Dad to no avail. I have thought of him many times over the years and especially on October 8. I think of him whenever I hear a Robbie Burns poem. We shared a love of Scots and the swirl of the pipes. I can still hear his booming voice yelling "LAW"!!! His bark was much worse than his bite. He made the world a better place and the legacy of his accomplishments in the building indudtry will live on forever.

Debbie, Grant and Scott,
I am so very sad for the passing of your Dad. He was a wonderful man and I remember when I worked for him at Brae Glen so very long ago, I always held your Dad in the most highest esteem and called him Mr. Rose always. I know though that he was a wonderful father as I had the privilege to see at the Highland Dance Competitions and many other family events.
Your Dad was truly a wonderful person and it was a privilege for me to know him and his wonderful family.

Fondly

Dear Debbie and family,

I thoroughly enjoyed working with George here in Calgary. I always admired his pragmatism and his work ethic. He and I saw eye to eye on a lot of things. I have often thought about him over the years after we both moved on to other challenges.
