Sweeney, Julia Denny
Julia Denny Sweeney, a resident of Litchfield Park since 2004, passed away peacefully at the La Loma Village Care Center on May 3. She was 79. Julia was the oldest daughter of A. Wallace and Edith Litchfield Denny and granddaughter of the town's namesake, Paul W. Litchfield, and enjoyed helping others learn about the history of Litchfield Park. In 2009 and 2010 she served as president of the Litchfield Park Historical Society. She recorded two DVDs containing tales of the early development of the town and memories of her childhood visits. She also served on the Board of Directors at the La Loma Village retirement complex. An enthusiastic crafts person, Julia enjoyed working in a number of media including precious metal and polymer clays. As a resident of La Loma Village, she helped other residents learn clay and other crafts. She was also an avid watercolor artist. After raising her family, Julia returned to her profession, Occupational Therapy. She earned her master's degree from the University of New Mexico. She became head of the O.T. department and the assistant director of education at the Children's Psychiatric Hospital in Albuquerque. She was later the head of O.T. at the Carrie Tingley Children's Hospital, also in Albuquerque. Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Jim. She leaves behind three children, Linda L. Sweeney of Litchfield Park, James E. Sweeney of Crescent Springs, Kentucky, and Robert W. Sweeney of San Marino, California, as well as five grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Pamela D. Blackford of Hopkinton, NH and a brother, Peter W. Denny of Boulder, CO. and seven nephews and nieces. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Julia asked that memorial donations be made to The Litchfield Park Historical Society, The City of Litchfield Park for the restoration of Rancho La Loma, or Hospice of the Valley.
