William Mapes Obituary

Mapes, William (Bill) West
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Bill passed away at age of 92 on Sunday, May 1, 2011. Bill was born October 13, 1918 in New Jersey. During World War II he enlisted in the Navy and became a Flight Engineering Officer aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Antietem. Upon his discharge, Bill was employed by Sperry Flight Systems. He retired from Sperry after a long and successful career as Director of International Marketing. Bill loved flying his single engine plane and gliders. He was a member of the Turf Soaring Club. When Bill wasn't in the air, you could find him building something or playing a round of golf. Bill was a loving and devoted husband to Doris A. Mapes for 69 years. Together they have two daughters: Sandra Corder (Brice) and Linda Lyon. Other family includes three grandchildren: Lisa Cumberland (George), Michael Webb (Amy) and Mark Webb (Vanessa). Great Grandchildren include Peyton, Carson, Jack, and Jasper. To say that he will be sorely missed is an understatement. He was a very special man and was adored by all of those having the good fortune of knowing him. A celebration of his life will be held at La Siena, 909 E. Northern Ave., Phoenix Arizona 85020 on May 28, 2011 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made to WellCare Foundation, 55 E. Lexington Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85012

So sorry for your loss and even though we never got to know him personally, how we have been blessed by our dear friend, his daughter, Linda. God bless you all as you grieve his passing. So sorry we could not be there for the memorial service, but you were in our thoughts and prayers. Hope to talk to you soon, Linda. Blessings,
Sarah and Bill Kohler

I had the privilege of being Bill and Doris Mapes physician at Mayo Clinic for many years. I always enjoyed seeing both of them. They were a great couple and wonderful people. My heartfelt condolences to Doris and her family,

Aunt Doris, Sandy, Linda, and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren,

I know how much you will miss him, as will I. Even though time and distance did not allow us to spend much time with you over the years, I always loved the time I did get to spend with Uncle Bill in Arizona. I'm so glad we got to see him last summer. He was one the happiest, funniest, most optimistic people I've ever known! I'm sure that he, Mom and Ken are having some wonderful times catching up, now that they are all together again. My heart is with you all, and I hope it brings a small measure of comfort to know that I will always hold him close in my heart.

Love to you all,

Jim & Doris Flannigan
