Dora Jolly Obituary

Jolly, Dora Lucille
Dora (called "Cook" for "Cookie" by many friends and family members) passed away at age 90, on May 10, 2011. Born in St. Louis, Missouri on Feb. 25, 1921 to Mary and Samuel Jolly and brought to Scottsdale at three months of age, she was a lifetime resident of the Valley. Growing up, Dora loved her horse "Pito" and spent her days riding on their 40 acres, which is now McCormick Railroad Park. She graduated from Scottsdale High School in 1938. Dora was a beloved family member and loyal friend -- a strong woman of faith and kindness. She was an executive secretary in the insurance industry for 49 years and an active member of the Scottsdale Historical Society, having served on the Board of Directors and volunteered in the archives for many years. She enjoyed painting and taking care of her yard. After Scottsdale High School was demolished, she painted images of Old Main and the "Beaver" mascot on the school's bricks, which were sold to raise money for the Historical Society. An avid bowler for many years, she and her sister Rosie Norton participated in several National Bowling Tournaments. Dora was preceded in death by her two sisters Marie T. White, Scottsdale, and Rosemary Norton, Camp Verde. Survivors include niece and caretaker Mary White Keltner (Gary), great nieces Nova Getsinger (Dennis) and Velva Poellot (Brian), nephew Malcolm L. White, and brother-in-law Clifton Norton, as well as great nieces Shannon Davis, Haley Farley, Ann Marie Garcia, great nephews, Billy White, and Paul, Mark & Dean Keltner, and great-great niece Ashely Beights. A noon to 1 pm visitation will be held on Sunday, May 15 at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, with a service to follow. Interment will be Monday, May 16 at Greenwood Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren in Phoenix, with services to commence at 11:00 a.m.
