William Murphy Obituary

Murphy, William T.
William "Bill" Murphy passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the age of eighty-seven surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 18, 1923 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The long Canadian winters led to Bill developing a strong skill and passion for hockey. He attended Washington State University on a football scholarship after serving in WWII, and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He returned to Canada where he met and married his wife, Mary Hennessy, of sixty-one years. A job opportunity brought the newlyweds to San Francisco, CA where they raised their family for the next 20 years. In 1972, the family once again relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where he was employed for many years by Armour/ConAgra Foods and Industrial Refrigeration. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and gave them a love of travel and many fond memories of summer vacations up the Pacific coast and throughout the country. Guided by his Catholic faith, Bill was a man that enjoyed the simple pleasures of life like fishing, camping, and following his children and grandchildren's sports and their many activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and his son, Peter. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children: KJ, Patrick, Terry, Brian, Michael, Bill, Madalene, Maria and Martin; 21 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 15, from 6-8pm, with the Rosary at 7pm at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School, Phoenix, AZ. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 16, at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 4715 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ.

My deepest sympathy to the Murphy family especially Aunt Mary.
I will always have fond memories of our visits together. Uncle Bud was always so good to us and we enjoyed being with him as well.

Dear Murphy family: The Sacramento Hennessys send their deep condolences. We all have wonderful memories of visiting your family in San Francisco, and you coming to visit our family in Sacramento when we all kids. All of us cousins loved to run around the park strip by your house - Uncle Bud was always a fun loving member of those events. We also were happy to attend some Murphy family weddings and gatherings in Phoenix. We all wish we could have been there for the service and send our heart-felt thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely, Suzanne Hennessy Pottle

Mr. and Mrs. Murphy-aka "Bud and Mary"- and the whole Murphy Clan: Just want you to know how much you all are in my heart this moment as the funeral in Phoenix likely is getting started...you all have so been on my mind since I heard the news of Mr. Murphy's death. I know it was time but it's still so hard...You all are such an important part of my life between being one of the lucky good friends of Maria, and having our moms be good friends, too, thanks to those St. Thomas days...to just really loving and appreciating each one of you individually let alone as an amazing and dear family. I was and still am always laughing whenever I am with ANY of you! I love you very much and have such great memories of being over at your house and seeing your dad preside over the comings and goings of everyone and at the dinner table, too. Cannot thank you all enough for all the love we've shared over the years...I loved your dad...and love your mom, too, give her and each other a big hug from me. Take dear care of yourselves and know you're in my heart and prayers. Love, Marty G.
