James Collie Obituary

Collie, James Bernard
of Phoenix, Arizona, went to be with his eternal savior, Jesus Christ on May 11, 2011 after a valiant battle with kidney cancer. Jim was born in Los Angeles. He was the first son of the proud parents, Bernard Collie (Los Angeles) and Mary (Black Pool England). He was in the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 190, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Birmingham High School, Pierce College and California State University of Northridge. Jim married the love of his life Gloria Collie and they enjoyed 37 years of a loving marriage together. Jim was always a leader and an inspiration to all from an early age. He quickly became a manager in the grocery store Thriftimart and proved his leadership abilities by gaining the confidence of all whom he worked with. Later he transitioned to working as a criminal investigator for the Department of Treasury, Criminal Investigation Division. Jim earned a reputation for being a "bulldog" in his work, as he was known to have the capacity to go in and "get the job done". Jim was well liked and was promoted to manager. Jim retired in 2004 and then went to work for Charles Schwab Investments and ran the company's security division from their Phoenix, AZ location. He retired from there in 2009 when his cancer came back. Jim loved his family and the outdoors. He loved to watch NFL football on TV and he would call his brother often and chat about the games that they just watched from two different states. Jim had a fantastic sense of humor. On one occasion he attached a large number of party poppers to his front door, so when his brother came into the house, they went off with a loud bang. Jim had a good laugh and teased his brother about that often. Jim loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved his family and showed great affection and respect for all. As a loving father he was generous and attentive, always being an example to follow. He made time available to friends and family and would offer solutions and answers, or thoughts about any subject when asked. He was a joy to be around. Jim fought his disease courageously with dignity and no complaints. Most who knew Jim, and were associated with him are of the opinion that this kind and capable man was taken from this earth, far too early. Jim led by example and inspired others to be their best. Jim made those around him smile with his quick wit and was generous, kind-hearted and tolerant. He will be terribly missed. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Mary, his son Eddie, and his father Bernard. He is survived by his wife Gloria, his brother Charles (Catherine), sister Michelle, brother-in-law, Jay (Nicole), sister-in-law Beth (Myron), his nephew, Thomas, and nieces, Sarah, Shawn, Ashley, and Meghan, and grand-nephew Ayden. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., at Queen of Heaven Mortuary Chapel 1562 E. Baseline Rd., Mesa, AZ 85204. Burial will follow services at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Queen of Heaven Mortuary.

A good man. I remember his voice, his wit, professionalism and wisdom. And out last lunch - we met? He drove - not sure he´d feel good enough to go, but he did and we had burritos and tacos. Rest In Peace, Jim. And to the family - wishing you continued comfort.

Our prayers and condolences go out to Gloria and all of Jim's family. Jim was a friend and inspiration beginning in my teenage years. I'm thankful to have known Jim and will always remember his leadership and humor. I'm so glad to have reacquainted with Jim prior to his passing if only for a brief time. Rest in peace my friend.

A moment in the sun.

My deep, hearfelt condolences to Jim's Family.

Jim Collie will always reside in my memories. He lives in my heart, in the way I conduct myself and in the knowledge that he has given to me. I knew Jim not only as a colleague at Charles Schwab, I considered him a mentor and friend as well. I can personally say that his guidance, the experiences he shared, and the wisdom he imparted continues to shape the way I conduct myself professionally and personally.

Some of the more profound guidance Jim gave was with quips; such as always telling your kids that you love them every day—to say it out loud, and not just imply it. Jim helped me overcome challenges by directly suggesting options or just by recommending alternate ways to approach a problem. Even when he had little or no first hand experience in some matters, that didn't stop him from giving it his all to help. His manner of thinking lifted roadblocks and moved intersections, resulting in a variety of solutions. My memories aren't all work and brow-bending seriousness - we shared tremendous lot of laughs, too! I can imagine that the same is true for anyone who came to know Jim.

So while I say good bye to a great man, I consider myself truly blessed and privileged to have the honor of knowing him.

Russ & I only met Jim a few times. We were both impressed with him as a person and wished we could have lived close enough to become friends.

As the days go by, and you grieve, your memories will turn to the good times, and it sounds as if you have a whole world of those.

I'll miss you, Uncle Jim. You were such a loving person, and the memories I have of you will be closely treasured.

I wish you were back, because you were a light among a dark world, one that too few people will know has been snuffed out by the darkness of this world.

I love you, Uncle Jim, and I'm afraid that I may have never told you that when you were still with us...

My dear brother, I am so happy you are with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I will miss you terribly until the day our Lord brings me home to be with you, mom, dad, and the rest of our family for that "great reunion". Until then, my life will never be the same, I will always think of you when I watch a football game, go camping, or just pick up the phone. I will miss our daily phone conversations, our "ribbing" each other, and most of all, your laughter at my "bats". I will endevour to continue to make you proud, follow your example, and be the best man that I can. You are my hero! I love you with all my heart..This is not good-bye, just a long "see you later!"
Until we see each other again...your loving little brother,
Charlie
