Robert Black Obituary
Robert C. Black, 47, of Phoenix, died on May 24, 2011. He was born in Kingman, AZ. Well respected teacher at North Canyon HS. Robert is survived by mother, Mary and three sisters: Lori, Beth, Cathi and many caring Aunts, and Uncles. He was most loved by his wife, Jill and their children, Trevor and Juliana. Robert is preceded in death by father, Charles. He will also be missed by many friends and colleagues. Services will be held at 1PM, Saturday, June 4, 2011 in the Chapel at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale. Contributions will be accepted for his children's college education fund at Desert Schools Federal Credit Union at 826 E. Chris and I graduated in 2000 and were still together. You meant a lot to both of us. Driving through Kingman yesterday after a tattoo appointment, saw the Dambar sign and had the most visceral memory 24 years later of you reading a poem you´d written about it. Told my friend about you and your class.

Another year Mr. Black. I am at district office now and will be retiring this June 30th. I work with open enrollments and share with families that North Canyon is a great school, especially our IB students. I will never forget you Mr. Black. RIP

I really miss Mr. Black. I was part of the 2006 graduating class and 12 years later the impression he made on me as my senior year English teacher was amazing. Today I am still a deep thinking person, reflecting on life, because of the wisdom he shared with me. I really hope to see him again someday to say thank you for his encouragement and love.

Mr. Black .... your IB students are visiting us here from their Universities during the winter break. They all look so grown up and happy. Seeing Max, Shivani, Breanna, Sasha, Chirag, Sruthi, etc. reminds me of you. I miss you Mr. Black. School is just not the same without you.

I was very sad to hear of Robert's passing (a little late, since I have not stayed connected with many people in phoenix). He was an excellent educator and generally caring person. I know he impacted many lives the way he impacted mine!

My sincerest condolences to Jill, Trevor and Juliana for your loss. Mr. Black taught me to open my eyes to the world around me and ask questions about everything. When I think of my IB experience there is always TOK and Mr. Black's delightful dry sense of humor. He will live on in each person whose life he touched through his friendship or education.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Black, the IB teacher who visited nightly at our kitchen table for so many years.
Both our sons had the great honor of being in his TOK class and their lives are forever changed because of it. The way they think, the way they approach a problem and their understanding of where they fit in the world were constantly challenged under Mr. Black's tutelage. As a parent, I am grateful that my sons had the privilege of working with him. I will treasure always the self-portraits, which on the surface seemed like art projects but which in reality were a life-lesson in looking deep inside to find your hidden talents and capabilities.
Thank you so much to Jill, Trevor, and Juliana for sharing him with all of us. He will be deeply missed. In my son's Facebook words:
"To the Teacher who taught us that our opinions didn't matter, that everything we knew was a lie, to think broader, to see all sides of an argument, To hold fast in your own thoughts. Mr Black, Rest in Peace, good Sir"

It was with the most profound sadness that our family learned of Mr. Black's passing. Robert has meant so much to our family and has touched all of our lives over the last several years.
As a respected teacher, extraordinary mentor, and genuinely caring individual; his talent, enthusiasm and commitment to North Canyon, the IB Program, and most importantly, his students, will be impossible to fully replace. The legacy of his contributions to the school, the community, and the students he served will live on for many years to come in the lives of those students, parents, and colleagues he touched.
The incredible number of students that have gone out into the world better educated and better prepared because of their experiences with him, is a testament to his far-reaching impact beyond just the North Canyon community.
I, personally, find it a terrible loss, as I considered Robert a friend, beyond our professional associations with my daughters and the IB program. Over the past several years I have worked with Robert to develop some enrichment programs for juniors and seniors in the IB program. The opportunity to work with him was immensely rewarding along so many dimensions.
He will be missed by so many, but our thoughts are now first and foremost with the family he loved. We hope that they find some comfort in the knowledge of the many lives he touched and how much he gave to all of us.
