Elwin Harris Obituary

Harris, Elwin A
Elwin, 85, was born to Elwin E and Esther Harris in Grand Forks, ND on May 30, 1925. He grew up in Madison, WI, served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, then completed his Masters degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin in 1947. Elwin worked with Hercules Powder Co. in Delaware, then the Hercules Research Center and other research areas. The love of his life was traveling, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, rafting and sailing. After moving to Sun City in 1992, Elwin became very active in the Sun City Hiking Club, exploring and mapping new hikes and leading the group to beautiful vistas in amazing Arizona. Elwin was a private, solitary, gentle person, faithful to his church choir, his many hiking friends, neighbors and family. Elwin died of a heart attack doing what he liked to do most - hiking in the wilderness, where he was found by hikers on May 19. He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, and two brother-in-laws. He is survived by 2 sisters, Ruth (Carl) Hoth of Bellingham, WA and Sun City, AZ and Marilyn Anderson Dagenais of Naperville, IL, along with 8 nieces and nephews and their children. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Willowbrook Methodist Church, 19390 N. 99th Ave, Sun City, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Willowbrook Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
