Meldrum Winstead Obituary

Winstead, Meldrum B. Jr.
passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Sun City West. Born in Lincolnton, NC on October 19, 1926 to the late M.B. and Annie H. Winstead, Meldrum was a 1946 graduate of Davidson College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1952 he earned a PhD in chemistry from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Winstead became a faculty member at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA and retired as professor emeritus of chemistry in 1991. Post-doctoral studies during his 39-year tenure included research at Chelsea College, the University of London, California Institute of Technology (under a National Institutes of Health fellowship), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Medi-Physics Inc. at Emeryville, CA, and Israel Resources Corporation, Technion, Haifa. In 1969 Dr. Winstead shared the first Georg von Hevesy Prize awarded by the European Society of Nuclear Medicine with former student and colleague H.S. Winchell. Dr. Winstead is survived by his wife of 52 years, Merle Holden Winstead; 3 married children: Deborah W. McNicholas (Edwin), Herndon, VA; Charles H. Winstead (Kunjan Raval), Portland, OR; and Ellen M. Winstead (John Gordon), Houston, TX; 4 grandchildren, and a sister, Margaret W. Spainhour, Charlotte, NC. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewisburg, PA. Inurnment will take place on June 20, 2011 at Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton, NC. Contributions in Dr. Winstead's honor may be directed to the Chemistry Graduate Research Fund at Bucknell University Development Office, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
