Mary B. Chavez (Ana Maria) left this world on May 29, 2011. Mary was born July 24, 1925 to Carlota and Jenaro Ballejos in St. Johns. She served as the Apache County Deputy Recorder for 16 years then was elected the Apache County Recorder and served for 16 more years. Mary belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was very involved in education and continued serving in the St. Johns PTA before having her own children and the St. Johns School Board. Mary was very involved at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mary is the beloved mother of Ellen Williams, Edward B. Chavez, Frances C. Duerst (Frank), Lillian Chavez (Greg), Irene Bennett, and Mario Ballejos (Cindy). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; Galen, Francisco, Roger, and Thomas Williams; Eddie Robert and Vincent Chavez; Allison Duerst; Gregory, Donovan, and Annika (Chavez) Navarro; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Belma Baca; brothers Antolino Ballejos and Roger Nuanez; plus a host of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Edward L. Chavez; to whom she had been married for 58 years; her parents and sisters Telesfora and Onesima. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hinkson Assisted Living, PO Box 3570, St. Johns, AZ 85936. A Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, St. Johns, AZ. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. also at the church. Interment will follow the service at the St. Johns Catholic Cemetery. Burnham Mortuary, St. Johns, handled the arrangements. To send an online condolence, log on to www.burnhammortuary.com.
