Nelson, Joan K.
of Carefree, AZ died suddenly on May 27 at the age of 73. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bruce A. Nelson, and three children; Ken W. Nelson, Santa Rosa, CA, Craig C. Nelson, Santa Rosa, CA, Brenda K. Brandt, Scottsdale, AZ; granddaughter Sara R. Nelson, Santa Rosa, CA; sister Kathleen Keilson, Danville, CA.; many nieces and nephews; long-time friends, Tom and Lee Carroll, Sun City, AZ. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Jacqueline Prien, Kent, WA. Joan and Bruce lived in northern California for most of their lives prior to moving to Carefree 13 years ago. She was a member of Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church and enjoyed her involvement with the Ladies Guild. After moving to Carefree, she became passionate about watercolor painting and became talented with the form. She found great pleasure in her art classes and time spent with her fellow students and instructors. She loved painting pictures and giving them as cherished gifts to her children, family and friends. Her creativity was also expressed within her quilting circle, a group of women whose friendship she treasured. Joan was involved in volunteer work at the church, library and other civic organizations. Friends and family may visit at Messinger Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale, Wed., June 1, at 5 pm to 8 pm., with a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Joy, is Thur., June 2 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, a gift may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association of The Great Phoenix Area or to Our Lady of Joy Catholic church.
