Harlan, Joseph William
96, of Phoenix, Arizona died on June 4, 2011. He was born on March 2, 1915 in Taconite, MN to Steve and Manda Hecomovich, from Croatia. He graduated Valedictorian from Greenway High School, Coleraine in 1933 and graduated with a Bachelor in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota in 1939. He then began a long and successful career in the retail department store business, working for several stores in Minnesota, and then moving to California in 1952. In California he began a 37 year career in a chain of department stores which became Carter Hawley Hale Stores, working at several different locations in California, mostly in San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles, then spent the last ten years of his career in Phoenix, as Chief Executive Officer of their Broadway Southwest Division. He retired in 1989. Carter Hawley Hale was later sold to Federated Department Stores, and the names of their stores were changed to Macy's. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Jeanie (nee Millar) Harlan, a brother, Steve Hecomovich, his second wife, Adele, by four children from two prior marriages: Sandy Tandler, and Dr. Bradley Harlan, Stephen Harlan and Douglas Harlan, eight grandchildren: Julian Tandler, Iliana Kurfess, Derek Perimon, Susan Harlan, Helen Harlan, Katharine Harlan, Aaron Harlan Blakey, Theran Harlan, and three great grandchildren: Sean Tandler, Beau Tandler and Kelsey Kurfess. He is preceded in death by four sisters, seven brothers, and his first wife, Helen (nee Krueger). A private service for family will be held at Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael, California, at a later date. We wish to thank his kind caregivers. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Arizona 85014, so that they may continue their compassionate care for all those who are in need.
