TAZEWELL, Va. — Nathan C. “Red” Guess, Jr., age 81, of Tazewell, Va., died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va. from injuries sustained in an accident. Born October 18, 1927 at O'toole, W.Va., he was a son of the late Nathan C. Guess, Sr. and the late Louise McGhee Guess.Mr. Guess was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II having served as a Seaman First Class on the USS John A. Newcomb in the South Pacific. He received many commendations to include two purple hearts. Nathan was on Iwo Jima during the raising of the American Flag. He was of the Christian faith and was attending Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Pounding Mill, Va. Mr. Guess had worked in the coal mines for the majority of his life, having worked as a Mine Foreman with US Steel at Gary, W.Va. He was a member of the Tazewell Masonic Lodge #62, AF and AM and the Tazewell Order of the Eastern Star #187.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Guess; two children, one son, William E. Guess; one infant daughter; one sister, Marcella Eanes.Survivors include his loving wife of twenty-one years, Rebecca Guess; sisters, Geraldine Lafon of Princeton, W.Va. and two other sisters; one brother, Ed Guess and wife, Barbara of Ohio; several nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.Funeral services for Nathan C. “Red” Guess, Jr. will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Robert Buckles and the Rev. J.C. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va. where Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 in Richlands, Va. Pallbearers will be Terry Long, Eric Newberry, Ronnie Childress, Dwayne Hale, Bill Kitts, and Mike Lambert. Lewey Sparks will serve as honorary pallbearer.The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2009, where Masonic Rites will be conducted by members of the Tazewell Masonic Lodge #62, AF and AM at 7:30 p.m. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. is serving the family of Mr. Guess and those wishing to express sympathy online may do so at www.hurstscottfuneralhomes.com.
