David Anatole Obituary

David Anatole 1909-2008 EGREMONT David Anatole, of Greenwich, Conn. and formerly of Egremont, Mass. and Lawrence, N.Y. died April 20, 2008, after a short illness, but a long and very rich life. Devoted husband for 66 years to the late Babs Anatole; loving father of Amy Schwab and her husband, Jim, and Mark Anatole and his wife, Jodi; proud Poppy to Kate and Joanna Schwab and Emily and Carter Anatole. "Tolia" as he was known to his old "China hand" friends and family, was born in Kiev, Russia. His 98 years were Horatio Alger-like. David's formal education ended when he left school at age 12 to support his mother and sisters. As a young adult he lived in China where his experiences were the stuff that Hollywood scripts are made of: his travels via caravan to Mongolia to buy wool for British colonials (he was typically the first Caucasian the locals had seen), marriage solicitations from Asian royalty, assisting cavalry escorts fighting bandits in the Gobi Desert before being kidnappedand on and on. David came to the U.S. at age 26 with broken Englishand a letter of business introduction. Over the next four decades and throughout his business career, he traveled throughout Europe, Asia, and South America as President of the textile division of a U.S. conglomerate, and later his own company, Haroco, Inc. David was blessed with a life long passion, horseback riding and jumping and the hunt, that extended from childhood to his early 90's. His beloved horses, from Adventurer to Captain George all too often gave Babs competition for weekend quality time. At age 90, David wrote his memoirs, "Ma Chu", which will remain a wonderful legacy to his family and future generations. Poppy, as Babs always reminded the family, "Happy Times." I didn't know Mr Anatole, but the obituary in the Times gave a wonderful description of a life well and richly lived.
