Ellen MacMillan Obituary

Ellen M. MacMillan 1925-2008 PITTSFIELD Ellen M. MacMillan, 83, of 33 Highland Ave. died Saturday afternoon at Kimball Farms Nursing Center where she resided since early August. Born in Harbor Main Newfoundland, Canada on June 11, 1925, she was the daughter of Thomas and Camilla Sullivan Hickey. She was a graduate of Presentation Convent School in Newfoundland. In the late 1940's she moved to Lenox where she had a sister, Genevieve Quinn, two aunts, an uncle and several cousins. She worked as a switchboard operator for New England Telephone in Lenox until 1953. In 1967 she returned to the switchboard, this time for the Sears Roebuck Dept. Store in Coltsville, work that she continued until her retirement in 1990. During her years as a homemaker and mother, she was active as a volunteer with The American Heart Association, the Berkshire County Association for Retarded Citizens and at Highland Park, the playground next to the family home, where she was well known to scores of park leaders in the 1960's. She was a communicant of St. Charles Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality. She leaves her husband, Gavin J. MacMillan, whom she married June 14, 1952, in Lenox. She also leaves three sons, Carl Gavin MacMillan of Toronto, Canada, A.J. MacMillan of New Hampshire and Thomas MacMillan of Pittsfield; a daughter, Gail Mary MacMillan of Chieng Mai, Thailand; two grandchildren, Mary Ellen MacMillan and Audrey Lynn MacMillan of New Hampshire, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Genevieve Quinn, of Lenox, and three brothers, Jerome Hickey, Reginald Hickey and Kenneth Hickey, all of Newfoundland, Canada. FUNERAL NOTICE: Ellen M. MacMillan died Saturday, Oct. 11. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 8 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Charles Church celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. The rite of Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the Dwyer Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Berkshire County Association for Retarded Citizens in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home.

AJ + the MacMillan family,

I'm so sorry to learn of the passing of your Mom. Shes was always so good to us neighborhood kids. I remember countless times of her smile and wave as we hung out in your garage.

To the MacMillan Family,

My condolences to the passing of your Mom/wife. I still remember her smiling face as we would pass by her on highland ave, never mind when she would wave while riding her bike. She was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed.
