Mary E. Flanagan

Mary E. Flanagan 1912 - 2008 CHESHIRE Mary E. Flanagan, 95, of 99 Dean St., died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born on Nov. 24, 1912, in Gt. Barrington she was a daughter of August and Ermelinda Iemolini Busti. A lifelong resident of Cheshire, she was educated in Cheshire schools and was a gr aduate of the former Adams High School. After high school she went on to the former North Adams State Teachers College where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She married her husband, the late Arthur T. Flanagan on Nov. 9, 1940, in Cheshire. He died on July 12, 1985. A school teacher, she had taught at one time in the Plainfield School System and at the former Mt. Carmel School in Pittsfield. She then went on to teach for many years in Cheshire retiring in 1976. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire and a former member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf. She was a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed poetry and reading. One of her greatest joys was returning to school to continue her education. She leaves two daughters; Catherine Flanagan Armata of Atlanta, Ga., and Pamela J. Murphy of Wellfleet. She also leaves a sister; Virginia Kopychak of Cheshire, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters; Cecilia "Pat" Belcher and Evelyn B. Tremblay, and by a brother, the late Joseph A. Busti. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mary E. Flanagan, 95, of Cheshire who died Oct. 12, 2008, will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire celebrated by the Rev. David Raymond, pastor, and by the Rev. William Furey, pastor, of Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesboro. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Flanagan may be made to Habitat for Humanity or to St. Mary of the Assumption Church both in care of the DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, North State Rd.
