PITTSFIELD -- Arthur Herrmann Jr., 83, of 73 Velma Ave., a former resident of Becket, died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a former member of the Becket Planning Board.
Born in Newark, N.J., on July 18, 1924, son of Arthur Herrmann Sr. and Bessie Mickens Herrmann, he was a 1942 graduate of Central High School there. He received his bachelor's degree in engineering in 1951 and his master's degree in 1952, both from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
He served in the Navy from May 1944 to May 1946.
Mr. Herrmann was employed by General Electric Co. as an optical engineer for 31 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the Bousquet Ski Patrol from 1975 to 2000 and of Berkshire Scuba Divers. He volunteered at Hancock Shaker Village for 18 years, making oval boxes, and for the American Association of Retired Persons, doing tax returns in the state of Florida. He climbed the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Mount Rainier in Washington state, and he enjoyed canoe racing.
He and his wife, the former Pauline A. Winslow Grover, were married Aug. 26, 1966.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Aletea Kennedy of Southampton and Aprylle Seroier of Munsonville, N.H.; a son, Ralph Herrmann of Westmoreland, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Donna Grover of Adams; three stepsons, Michael Grover of Sante Fe, N.M., David Grover of West Stockbridge and Philip Grover of Cheshire; six stepgrandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Arthur Herrmann Jr., who died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield. Following cremation, burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams. Donations in his memory may be made to the National Children's Music Project, P.O. Box 190, West Stockbridge, MA 01235, or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 369 South St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
