Evelyn Carstensen Obituary

86, Enjoyed volunteer work, loved her family and friends. Evie Carstensen, a longtime resident of Lincoln Mass and Osterville, passed away June 10th. She grew up in Winnetka, Ill and attended the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, graduating in 1940. She made her debut in Chicago that same year. In September she entered Connecticut College, where she finished two years before leaving to do volunteer work at Cook County Hospital in Chicago during WWII. In 1945, Evie married the late Warren (Skip) Carstensen. They settled in Lincoln, where they raised their son Sandy & daughter Lyndie. In 1954 Evie and Skip achieved fame by trying to get their balking pet donkeys (Buttercup and Sunflower) across Route 2 in Concord, MA during a rain storm, while holding up traffic. A photo of the struggle appeared in papers throughout the world, and was named one of the top 10 news photos of the year, with the caption, "Drive safely; The ass you save may be your own." Evie summered in Hyannisport as a child, before she and Skip bought property in Osterville in the 1960's. She is survived by her two children, 5 grandchildren and five and a half great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Firemen's Association, 1875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I had the pleasure of meeting Evie volunteering at Emerson Hospital in Concord in the 1960's. We had a lot of fun working together and enjoyed talking about Bermuda. She was a wonderful lady, so giving and fun to be with. She will be remembered fondly.
