Dearest Richard ~ I read with great sadness the poignant words about your dear wife which obviously came from your loving heart. I remember so clearly, as if it were yesterday rather than nearly forty years ago, how you would happily come in to work, with your long stride, joyous expression and generous personality, each and every day and always predictably positive, and talk so proudly about your wife and children. I remember you spent most evenings at swim meets, and were the happiest of husbands and proudest of Dads! I have thought of you so often over the years, and tried to reach you several times, but failed. You were my mentor in many ways, and I wanted to share with you how well my life progressed and how blessed I am. I regret that I have found you in this way, at this very sad time in your life, but I know for sure that Joan must have transitioned from this life calmly and peacefully, if you were there to give her comfort, care and simply your loving presence. I will write to you. My heart is heavy for you and your family, but I can tell you with much authority that eventually the pain of your loss, and Joan's sickness and death, will be replaced, slowly over time, with the thousands of happy, loving, family memories that you undoubtedly shared over so many decades. Peace of heart and mind to all of you. May our gracious God shine His choicest blessings down upon you all. With much affection, Georgia (Cusick) Patterson (Northeastern University, early seventies)
