Betty Squires Obituary
Was born in Hartford, CT on Oct. 26, 1921 to Myrtle and Larry Allison. She grew up in Wethersfield, CT. Rusti graduated from the Teacher's College of Connecticut, majoring in Education (now CCSU) and she received a Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Social Work. She married Rathbun B. Squires of Richmond, IN on June 29, 1946. Rusti and Rath raised four children in Pittsburgh, PA, David, Patricia, Donald and Charlie. She practiced social work on Pittsburgh's South Side. She was active in Girl Scouts, South Avenue Methodist Church, Woodside School PTA, and taught swimming. In 1968, the family moved to Scotch Plains, NJ, where they resided for the next 35 years. She taught fifth and sixth grade in the Plainfield Public Schools and was a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church, working as a Stephen Minister and sponsoring Corner Stone retreats for the Church. She and Rath became guardians to Lolly and Sandy Squires after their parents died. During retirement, she was an active golfer, bridge player, worked with Literacy Volunteers of America, gardened and traveled extensively. Rath died in 1991. Rusti remained in Scotch Plains until 2003, when she moved to Newton, MA. There, she was a member of the United Parish of Auburndale, where she was active in Bible Study and the senior group. She participated in the Senior Citizens Center of Newton in the bridge club and helped the vision impaired group. She died at Newtown-Wellesley Hospital on June 14, 2008 of complications from pneumonia. She is survived by five children, ten grandchildren, and four great-grand children. Two Memorial Services are scheduled: July 19 at 10 AM at the United Parish of Auburndale, Newton, MA and the Westfield United Methodist Church at 11 AM on September 13.
