Nicholas was a member of my third grade class. When he left for middle school I would see him walking home from the bus stop in the late afternoon. I'd beep and wave. I'm not sure he even knew who was beeping. Just seeing him brought a smile to my face. Last summer while taking an early morning walk I thought I recognized a young football player. "Hey, Nicholas!" I yelled to the boy across the street. Sure enough he turned, tilted his head, smiled, waved and went on his way. I smiled and remembered earlier days. I never expected to see any of my former students in Walpole. I saw Nick many times after that.....the same tilt of the head, the smile and the wave. Each time I couldn't help but smile.
I saw Nicholas the week of final exams as I made my way through the pick up line at the high school. "Hey, Nicholas!" I yelled. Sure enough I saw the same tilt of his head, the smile, and the wave. I smiled . I decided that I'd have to stop and chat one of these times.
I am so very, very sorry.

Dear Nick,
It was a pleasure teaching you in Grade 5. You were a joy to have in the classroom. I know you kept working hard at your middle school studies since your teacher and I went to the same church and I would often inquire about your progress. I know you are up in heaven looking down at the Kilmer. I will pray for you and your family.
With peace and love,
