I just learned of Stuart's death from a message on the psychodynamic research listserv. I am stunned and extremely saddened by the news. I once served with Stuart on an NICHD grant review panel for two years. He was such an unusual combination of excellent scholar/ researcher and warm, kind, and thoughtful human being. He and I sometimes teamed up to give creative young scholars the benefit of the doubt when the committee reviewed their proposals, and over the years I have thought of Stuart every time I have seen that one of those young scholars is now famous, winning awards, and shaping the field. What a loss to the field and the world!

I have read all of the entries below and cannot say anything more eloquent than my predecessors. Stuart was a unique human being and a dear friend. Kathy and I will miss his charm, wit, and his sense of commitment. There are few people who I have met who have had a more profound effect on my life -both professionally and personally.

Indeed Stuart was a wonderful and adorable friend. I shall remember him as warm with a very engaging and scholarly interpretation of many issues. His outstanding and superb participation on the panel of judges who evaluate high school students’ science projects will be missed immensely. Considering ones journey, it has been marvelous to have known and serve with Stuart in such a special capacity, and I cherish the memories.

What a great men Dr. Hauser was I first met him in 2006 when I started working at JBCC. I was his personal assistant. It was a joy and a pleasure to work with him everyday. I was mentored by Stuart during an IPA research training conference in London and will always remember his kind and encouraging support. I also visited him at the Judge Baker Centre. As a raw researcher awed by his research experience and reputation, what I remember most fondly was his way of managing to make me feel I had given him something interesting to think about!
A remarkable man; unassumimg, wise and scholarly.

Stuart was my mentor for just a week but I will treasure his wonderful influence as a life-long gift. I remember him as a profoundly gentle and generous person who served as a role model of wisdom, respect and genuine humanity to his students and fellow-teachers alike. I will keep him in my mind as one of the most inspiring and brilliant people I’ve met. My warmest condolences to his family and friends.

Stuart was a man of generous spirit, kindness, and warmth. He remained inquisitive and engaged each day, a role model to us all. And as my husband and I learned when we first met Stuart in Chile, he had delightful sense of adventure. We will miss him.

Stuart was a role model for me as a budding researcher, but also served as a model human being. Warm, kind, loving, and respectful, I never ceased to be amazed by the seemingly limitless reserve of patience, interest and time that Stuart seemed to draw from. I will miss him and I send my condolences to his family.

What a terrible loss for Stuart's family and all those who worked with him. I first met him in 1988 when I started working at MMHC and got to know him better when I started working for the HMS Consolidated Department of Psychiatry. He was such a warm, kind, considerate and caring person. When I adopted my daughter from China, he would ask me about her every time I saw him. I've missed seeing him at meetings over the past few months and looked forward to his return. My deepest sympathies to his family. He was a remarkable man.

I have known Stuart for all of my professional career. We trained together, studied the same areas, collaborated in different settings. He was an extraordinary man: brilliant, devoted, gifted and wise, his capacity for mentoring younger people and his generosity with colleagues at all levels leave me with gratitude and memories I will keep forever. His sudden loss is stunning. My thoughts are with Barbara and their children at this awful time.
