Sigmund Fleck Obituary

86, of Richmond and Boston, died Thursday, July 31, at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox. Born in Tarnow, Poland, the son of Edward and Maria Glowinski Fleck, he received degrees in Dental Medicine from Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany, in 1950, and Tufts School of Dental Medicine, Boston, in 1959. He was a research assistant at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine from 1960 to 1961, and a Clinical Assistant there from 1970 to 1974. From 1968 until last year, he was with Tufts University School of Dental Medicine serving first as a clinical instructor, then as an assistant professor, and for his last ten years there as an associate professor. Dr. Fleck maintained a general private practice in Pittsfield from 1960 until his retirement in 1995. During that time, he was also an attending in dentistry at Berkshire Medical Center and for his last ten years there, was director of general practice dental residency. Dr. Fleck also presented numerous papers on prosthetics at European Dental Congresses in Switzerland, West Germany, Hungary, Poland, Greece, Spain, and the International Dental Congresses in Cairo, Egypt, and in Porto-Carras, Greece. In 1996, he published the results of a survey of complete denture prosthodontic techniques in predoctoral programs in North American Dental Schools. Dr. Fleck was a member of the American Dental Association, the Northeastern Prosthodontic Society, the International Dental Federation, Past Secretary of the Berkshire Dental Society, and a Fellow of the Academy of International Dental Studies. He enjoyed skiing, tennis, playing squash, and gardening. Dr. Fleck leaves his wife, Palma Mauro Lynch Fleck, of Richmond and Boston, whom he married on August 24, 1985. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Sigmund J. Fleck and his wife, Colleen, of Malvern, Pennsylvania, and their children, Nolan and Kyle; a son, Edward C. Fleck and his wife, Eileen McCormack of Boston and their children, Peter and Margaret; a daughter, Anne C. McLaughlin of Lenox; a son, in-law, Sean McLaughlin of Richmond; and their children, Addie and William. A private celebration of the life of Dr. Sigmund Fleck, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Fleck may be made to the Alzheimers Association in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
