Doris Blake Obituary

92, born Doris Brown in Stanwood, Michigan, died on August 5, 2008, at home in Newton Centre, MA, after a lifetime dedicated to her family and to helping others. Mrs. Blake was a graduate of Taylor University, Upland, IN, and divorced from Dr. C. Melvin Blake. Her five children survive her - Dr. Paul Blake of Salem, OR; Sue Blake of Watertown, MA; John Blake of Vilas, NC; David Blake of Bellingham, WA; and Stephen Blake of Pittsfield, NH. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Marjorie Brink of Big Rapids, MI; and her two brothers, Franklin Brown and Robert Brown of Grand Rapids, MI. Dr. and Mrs. Blake began their work in the Methodist ministry in Indiana, going from there to a decade of missionary work in Angola, Africa. After 12 years in NJ, the family moved to Newton. For several years, Mrs. Blake was assistant director of the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in the South End of Boston. She was an active member of the United Parish of Auburndale and the Social Science Club of Newton, a volunteer teacher of English as a second language, and a hostess for the Hospitality Program (now Hospitality Homes). Arrangements are being made by Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home of Stoneham. Cremation and burial will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 30, at the United Parish of Auburndale in Newton.
