Diane Greene Obituary

GREENE, Diane Lewis Passed peacefully on September 13, at her beloved home in West Tisbury, on Martha's Vineyard, after a brave battle against ALS. Diane was born August 22, 1944, raised in Pittsford, NY, and spent happy childhood summers driving powerboats on Canandaigua Lake. A graduate of Wells College, she loved her work as a social policy researcher at Abt Associates, Inc, and welcoming friends and family into her home. Most of all, she treasured caring for her three daughters, whom she raised in Providence, RI and Concord and West Tisbury, MA. Diane's true home was on the Vineyard, where she spent more than 40 summers enjoying walks on the beach, gardening, and cooking delicious meals with local produce. She moved to the Vineyard year-round in 2007. She is survived by Foster C. Greene Jr., her husband of 37 years, daughters Katherine F. Greene, Abigail Greene Goldman, and Margaret C. Greene, and her granddaughter, Mira Lewis Goldman, who was born this August, on Diane's 64th birthday. She will also be remembered lovingly by her mother, Elizabeth L. Lewis, her sister, Elizabeth L. Small, her brother, Donald M. Lewis III, and their families. Friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday, September 19 at 3pm, at St. Andrew's Church, 34 N. Summer St., Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA, and to a celebration of Diane's life, following the service, at the Greenes' home, 24 Alex Way, Nat's Farm, West Tisbury. In lieu of flowers, Diane would be honored by donations to the Vineyard Nursing Association, the staff of which helped Foster take wonderful care of her at home this past year.

I am one of Diane's Concord book group friends. Over the years we shared and enjoyed many wonderful books and friendship (wine and dessert were a very important ritual at our meetings). I particularly remember one weekend that we spent as a group in Maine, eating lobsters, going for walks by the shore, and just generally enjoying the camaraderie of like-minded women. Diane was an important contributor and had an impressive knowledge of literature, contemporary and historical but we will miss her most of all for her sense of humour, good nature and the courageous way in which she faced serious illness. My condolences to her entire family.
