TORNEY, Daniel B. Of South Boston, October 2, 2008. Beloved son of the late Daniel B. and Margaret D. (Toomey) Torney. Loving father of Catherine M. Ponte and her husband David M. of Pembroke and Kerry A. Newcomb and her husband David L. of Milton. Cherished grandfather of Michael and Caitlin Ponte and Danielle and Kyle Newcomb. Dear brother of Margaret "Peg" Bonner and her husband James F. of Quincy. Loving godfather of Jacqueline Owens and her husband Michael of Weymouth. Also survived by his grandniece Margaret "Maggie" Owens and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Army Veteran. Retired 35 year employee of Boston Gas. Old Guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Worked at Marina Bay Concierge. Funeral from The O'Brien Funeral Home, 146 Dorchester St., SOUTH BOSTON, Monday at 9:00AM. Funeral Mass in St. Brigid's Church at 10:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 2-6PM. Interment will be private.

I found out today about Dan's death, and was very saddened by the news.

Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army-especially as a member of the 3rd Infanty Regiment-the "Old Guard"-guarding the Tomb of the Unkown Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetary in Rain or Shine 24/7. And to your family and loved ones, I wihs to extend my deepest sympathy.
