My mother, Kathrine Browning Stokes, and Margaret Burns grew up together in Yoakum, Texas. Throughout my life my mother spoke glowingly of Margaret Burns Carney. She often reminded us that "Margaret was always the prettiest girl in the class." Even though Margaret's adult life was far away from Yoakum, she returned for high school reunions and stayed in touch with my mother. And my mother always brought me up to date on Margaret when she had the latest. In the last couple of years of her life, after my mother could no longer write letters, I wrote some to Margaret for her. When my mother passed away in September of 2007, Margaret called to chat and share sympathy. What a remarkably long and well-lived life, Margaret Burns Carney!
