Harry Barnes Obituary

BARNES, Harry S. 93, of Keaau, Hawaii, passed away June 8. Born in Belmont, MA, he was a retired Major in the USAF and a U.S. Army Air Corp glider pilot in W.W.II. Following W.W. II, he worked as a jet mechanic for American Airlines in Tulsa, OK, until he retired to HI. He was the son of the late Harry T. and Hellen (Bucknam) Barnes of Waltham. He was married to Julia (McCoy) Barnes and the late Dorothy (Gorseline) Barnes, and is the father of Lois Rayburn of Texarkana, TX, stepfather of Sherry Arkangel of Keaau. Brother of Marion Gentry of Waltham, Leonard Barnes and wife Grace of Lake Helen, FL and the late Mabel King of Waltham. Also survived by 6 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.Graduate of Waltham High School, Class of 1932. Life member Belmont Beaver Lodge (Simon W. Robinson) AF&AM. Interment Mt. Feake Cemetery, Waltham, Friday, Oct. 31 at 1:30 PM.

Maj. Barnes,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USAF and U.S. Army Air Forces-especially during WW II when you were a glider pilot. The glider pilots of WW II were some of the bravest-they piloted gliders made of wood and fabric with no armor and basically the aerodynamics of a rock in what could be best described as a controlled crash landing-and once once on the ground they would fight as infantrymen. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
